Water Hurts Going Down, Any Advise?

Recommended Posts

The feeling you are experiencing is normal for everyone with the exception of the length of time it takes to go away. I was sleeved 6 weeks ago and just recently have been able to tolerate Water. I've found that to be normal throughout the treads on this site. I also want to clarify the straw dilemma. The reason they don't want you to use one is due to the air in can create in your stomach. I have always used straws before sleeved and if I use one now, sometimes it's tolerable, others, not so good. Seems to depend on the day. Make sure you look through all the threads on here and I'm confidant you'll find great suggestions for all you encounter. Good luck with your journey.

I was just sleeved last Thursday. I am worry that I am drinking any water' date=' I have tried small sips, with ice, without ice, but still hurts going down. I just don't understand, on the other hand yogurt, blended Soups, and Popsicles go down with no problem. Any advise?

Thank you

Stay with the ice chips. You need that H2O....

I only could drink room temp or warm/hot liquids for the first 6-8 weeks. My tiny tummy didn't like cold at all.

At this point the important thing is fluids in general. So try different temps all the way up to hot to slushy cold. If flavored drinks go down without hurting then there you go. One last thing, are you sipping through a straw? If so try without. Straws are not advised and I can confirm this that it isn't as comfortable when first sleeved.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
