Why Am I So Hungry? Freaking Out!

Recommended Posts

So I'm about 7 weeks out of surgery and overnight I dropped a couple of pounds after having been stalled for 2 weeks. Today I've been ravenously hungry! So hungry that I feel actually physically sick from it. Granted I ran out of my Protein Drink yesterday so today I haven't gotten as much Protein as normal...but has this happened to anybody else? Is it because my metabolism has jump started again? Is it because I lost 3 lbs overnight? I'm now slightly freaking out that my stomach is going to stretch out. Or that I'm going to always be hungry now! Why am I so hungry?!?

Are you taking a PPI (nexiu, prilosec, omeprazole)? I use to get ravenously hungry before I started taking these. I also take Gas X and Beano for gas. It does help. What are you eating today since you don't have any Protein Shakes? I know that if I don't get my Protein shakes in, I can eat a lot more. :)

Get in some Water - not liquids Water. Then get in some protien, after waiting the optimal time - somewhere in there get in your multi...

You really have to keep with a food schedule, and make sure you have decent food options available.

It could be you need an antacid - especially if you feel ill along with the hunger sensation.

You could be dehydrated.

BUT - anythime in this journey you feel truly nauseated, check your heart rates, and "feel" for further discomfort - breathing, claminess, sweats, pain - many of us have heart issues and this is taxing. Nausea is overlooked way too often in my opinion...

I get this all the time and I'm over three months post op. I'm on PPIs, drink plenty of Water, etc. Even my doctor can't explain why I'm getting this. Never had it before surgery either. I've gotten to the point where I eat every hour or two just to hold that awful pain off for a bit longer.

I do get hungry. I eat every two hours. If I don't eat I feel physically sick. However, I eat about 2 - 3 oz. and I'm done. Than 2 hours later, I'm hungry again. So I am constantly sipping Water and eating. Was never like this before but hey Im just going with it. I carry Protein Bars with me so when I'm out and about I don't turn into the dragon lady

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
