Can't Drink What I Want

Recommended Posts

ok so I'm post op day six and i've been struggling with the hydration issue. i can only seem to drink ice cold Water with maybe a little apple juice for flavor, everything else hurts like mad or taste horrible. I've always been a big drinker lol (non alcohol of course) so my feelings are quite a bit hurt when former faves like Powerade zero and even Protein Shakes (yea i actually liked those pre op) won't cooperate with my new and improved belly. :(

Don't worry too much just yet. Time seems to help a lot with tolerating things. Give it a few days and then try again?

Your stomach is still probably VERY swollen. It took me 7-8 days to get past the "wicked bad pain" whenever I drank anything. Especially if I took more than a tiny little sip. It felt like very bad cramps along with a stabbing pain!

I am now 4 weeks post-op and drinking is not a problem (though I've gotten VERY tired of Protein shakes). I'm still dealing with eating (in the mushie stage....supposed to be onto regular food now, but my sleeve doesn't really like that yet).

Give yourself time to heal. You'll be back to Powerade Zero and Protein shakes soon.

Just make sure you're getting in all your fluids even if it is just plain Water so you don't get dehydrated! You may not particularly like it, but if it's what you can tolerate then just go with it for now! You can try adding some Beneprotein or unflavored Unjury to it to try to get in some Protein too, but no matter what make sure you keep drinking!

It will take time. I can pretty much quite a bit now without hurting my stomach but it took a while. Sip, sip, sip every few minutes to make sure you keep hydrated. I know it's hard and frustrating but once your stomach heals you'll be able to drink more.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
