Be very careful here. It is very easy to get dehydrated. Your sense of smell and taste buds will return but you have to stay hydrated.

If you can't handle regular Water, add Crystal Light or some other flavorings. Like massindex said, you need to make sure you get as many fluids as possible. Right after surgery, anything counts toward your liquid total for the day, but you need to make sure you're staying hydrated somehow or you'll end up back in the hospital with dehydration.

As far as smells go, it is different for everyone. I noticed smells were stronger, but they didn't bother me. However, I do have a friend who said the smells bothered her for the first week or so after surgery. Hang in there!!

+1 on the smells. I had surgery same day as you and food odors have been really strong since then. Wife brought home el pollo loco for her and the kids and I had to leave the room

Water tastes funny to me right now too. Just been drinking Protein shakes and sobe life water instead

I know exactly what you are talking about. My sense of smell has been heightened and my tastes have totally changed. The smell has not gone away and things that make me sick to look at I will probably never eat again. The bad taste in your mouth does subside with time but it will take a little while. Make sure you drink something like gatorade or Powerade with electrolytes if you cannot stand Water because you will dehydrate quickly. You will feel tired for a while because you just had a major surgery and your body is trying to heal so that is normal. Just keep drinking it will help you feel better I promise.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
