What kind of exercise will I be able to do post op? I am fairly sedentary but do enjoy walking. What I am wondering is won't there be considerable weakness with such a restrictive diet and limits on hydration? Can anyone enlighten me?

I'm only 4 weeks out, but can tell you what my doctor said. Normally the first 4-6 weeks is limited to just walking. You should try to walk at least 30 minutes a day. Depending on your surgeon, you can increase activity somewhere between the first 4-6 weeks usually. I was told I could get in the pool at 2-3 week (as soon as my incisions healed), but to be careful not to do a whole lot in the pool to possibly hurt the incisions.

As far as rehydration goes, I keep a Water bottle filled with either a Protein drink or Water all the time. I sip from it every few minutes throughout the day. I do the same when exercising (except in the pool).

Thank-you for the info. Now that you mention it I do remember about sipping water all day long. Good luck with your journey.

I could barely walk pre-op, and I started out very slowly with "just" walking. By three weeks out, I impressed myself by being able to walk around the lake in my apartment complex! I added in recumbent bike at around 5 weeks out and could only do 5 or 10 minutes without being exhausted. I was cleared for weights by 6 weeks out and started doing 10 reps a day of 2 pound weights for very basic arm exercises.

9.5 months out, I go to the gym every single day. It's not negotiable. I do half an hour of cardio at least every single day. Every second day, I also do every weight machine in my gym. I also walk 4 flights of stairs regularly, 3 times a week or so... and I try to go up and down them 4 times every time I walk them.

Start slow and build up. Make sure you're pushing your body, but only a little at a time until you're further post-op. It will get easier and you will be able to exercise.

I also suggest that you join My Fitness Pal. It's a great place to log your food/water intake and to track your exercise and weight.

Good luck! :)

Hey Lissa

Thanks for the info. I joined my fitness pal a couple of days ago. I am not even to the point of knowing whether or not I'm a good candidate for the sleeve. I go to my 1st info session in early July. The info I have at this point stated that I should start now to work on food choices and exercise. I've started walking 1.5 miles, but at a very modest pace. So I was really curios about post op. you've been a big help. You're dedication is inspiring.

I was in an auto accident in '03; and still have problems with my shoulders and neck. My back - well excess weight doesn't help.

I have been walking for 20 minutes a day; Richard Simmons for about 10 mins til I want to die; watched Jane Fonda (Yeah, just watched - watching makes me tired).

I have been trying one pound weights and, frankly, it hurts. But I am not going to give up. I may never be as active as I was pre-accident, but I sure am going to give it a try.

Ben, Just watching Jane Fonda always made me tired as well. I used to try to do the Sweatin' to the Oldies stuff. I wonder if I could do it now (without laughing like a nut of course)!

Good luck with the weights. I hurt like crazy when I first started and sometimes I wonder if I've lost my mind, but keep at it and it will get better.

20 minutes a day is a great start! :)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
