Anyone post-op have problems with Vit B deficiency due to the intrinsic factor problems from the stomach being cut? VIt B deficiences can be harmful and may contribute to depression and fatigue (something I already am dealing with pre-op).

Thanks for your time

I think most Drs think ahead on that. I am on a monthly B12 shot as well as a B1 pill everyday. Add that to my chewable Multivitamin, I think I should be ok lol. Talk to your dr about your worries. They will do what's best for your case.

Yup - I recently had my blood work done and met with my surgeon. Sure enough, B and Iron deficiency. Now I've added a super B and iron supplement to my daily Vitamin regime.

Yep. I was really bad about taking my sublingual B12 post op - it just didn't seem important. After one year out I felt really run down, kinda depressed and was very forgetful. I had a panel run and was very deficient on B12 and Iron. Now I'm on B12 injections and a new Iron supplement. It's been a few months and I feel a million times better.

So yes, it's possible. I'd say that if you're concerned about this, be certain to get your panels done at six months, one year and beyond. I put the second panel off until I had an issue, when it could have been resolved sooner.

Cheri,

Are you on B12 injections indefinately or will you go back to sublingual? Does insurance cover the injections?

I was Vitamin b deficient before surgery. I take monthly shots and now test normal. Will your doc give you shots or pills?

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
