Bcbs Of Ga And Approval Questions

Recommended Posts

Would anyone know if a bmi of 38.74, 240lbs, high cholesterol, asthma, GERD's, sleep apnea, 48"waist, and late 40's female would be enough to qualify for wls (sleeve) through bcbs of ga? I do know my insurance covers wls but I am not 40 plus bmi nor do I have diabetes, hbp, although my mother and both of her parents have both. Just not sure my issues are qualifying comorbidities?! Thanks

I'm not sure about your insurer, but GERD and sleep apnea usually qualify as comorbidities associated with weight.

I would call and find out the exact requirements. Usually obstructive sleep apnea is recognized as a co-morb.

Thanks for responding! I have talked with bcbs ga and they even sent me policy in regards to surgery, but it only read bmi 40 plus, or bmi 35 or greater with 2 qualifying comorbidities like diabetes, hbp, and there was one more, but I can't remember....(working).....anyhow the things I mentioned were not listed. But it said like not only....so I tried to look on internet to find qualifying cms and nothing yet for my insurance. I had hoped someone else might have dealt with this insurance for similar circumstances and might possibly be able to clue me in on requirements....but the responses were helpful just the same!!

I appreciate the advice! I've already been to seminar, and have my first appointment in 2 weeks, when do I get a cordinator? Almost all of my testing has been done through my PCP before I attended seminar, and yes they can be used at center. I'm not sure how the sequence of events occurs I k.ow I still have to do psych eval. and nutritionist, and surgeon jbut not the length of time from one to the other and where the approval/denial from insurance falls into place .... Rambling, SORRY!

When u meet your surgeon he or she will have a coordinator ...but I can't meet my surgeon until I have my paper work .. But my coordinator gave me a package to follow what I need for my insurance company and I gave a package to my pcp but I just call her when I run into something I don't understand she is the one I deal w until then .. That person is usually nurse to the surgeon

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
