I'm sure many people have had surgery with gallstones, most people have little ones but they only become problematic beyond a certain point.

Gallstones can resolve, they can be treated with ultrasound or they are removed surgically.

That's the extent of my general knowledge though, no doubt somebody else has more accurate information.

I thought that sometimes they could remove the gallbladder and do the lapbanding at the same time?

I had gallstones and sludge in my GB. I actually had scheduled a surgery for removal but then I had a terrible bout of GB attacks and ended up having emergency surgery to get it out. The good news? Once that darn thing was out of me I felt GREAT! This all happened years before surgery but I've heard of people having their GB removed during their band surgery. I would think that would be a good plan to consider if I knew it had to come out. Good luck and let us know what happens!

I had 1 gallstone measuring 1 cm, which is apparently pretty big. My doctor said that it's best to have the gall bladder out first, 'cause as you lose wt you can be more at risk for gall bladder attacks. He also said that it's better not to have the gall bladder out at the same time as the band in case any gall leaks out, or a stone makes a break for it into the body. So they scheduled me for the gall bladder surgery and then 3 weeks later for the band.

Unless you have to have an open band surgery, in which case they can do it at the same time. I guess it's 'cause they can grab it easily rather than trying to baggy it and whisk to liquid.

Well, I'm sorry you have to have 2 surgeries but I'm glad that you've got it figured out and have a plan. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and let us know how it goes!

Hi,

My gallbladder was playing up and so it was a factor in my deciding to have the band when I did. My doc said he'd do both at the same time and that's what happened. It didn't effect my recovery or anything and I am happy I did both together...one op, one anaesthetic and one set of scars. By the way, I had 28 stones handed to me when I came round lol!!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
