Recommended Posts

I have anxiety (like the kind that makes me take meds) and I was just curious to hear from some others who suffers from anxiety disorder and how the anxiety was after surgery.

When do you have your surgery? I mean, I was cleared by the psych doc but still a teeny bit concerned. I do believe I could be a certified over-thinker!

I developed acute anxiety disorder after I had my surgery and though it is getting better with the help of medication, I am six weeks out and still have some symptoms. The one symptom that I struggle with now is the breathing. I start to hyperventilate by trying to take too deep of a breath which causes me to panic because it feels like I should be able to, but when I stop and remind myself to take slow, deep breaths the problem resolves. It eventually comes back throughout the day, but it is much better than it was. I was having full on panic attacks. Racing heart rate, difficulty berating, tingling in my neck and hands, dizziness, feeling faint, and extreme fear. Since taking my meds, those have subsided significantly. Based on what I have heard from most people is that it will subside over the first several months and typically not recur. Since I am only 6 weeks out from my surgery I think I may have a little bit to go before I am symptom/anxiety free. I just hold on to the knowledge that the anxiety and depression will eventually subside.

If you’d like more information on my emotional struggles post-surgery, I have a blog on this site under “The Weight loss Journey of VegasBusby”.

I wish you all the best!!

I have lived with a generalized anxiety disorder my whole life. I treat it with a low dose of Zoloft. Of course, one of my primary triggers has always been medical issues. It was a clear indication to me and my family how serious I was about weight loss that I was willing to even consider surgery.

Ill be honest. Pre-op my anxiety was pretty bad. Same while I was in the hospital. But since I've been home (I'm 2 weeks out today) I really have not had any issues.

I too have generalized anxiety disorder and am on Zoloft. It's the first medicine that actually helps keep my anxiety at bay. I do have breakthru panic attacks but they arent as bad as the full blown panic attacks I had before where I got dizzy, my heart was beating out of my chest, sweaty, thought I was going to die...

I have battled anxiety for a while now. Before I was discharged from the hospital they gave me approval for all my meds, including my anxiety med. I am one week out and with the pain, unknown, and living with my in laws... I have not had one single panic attack since the day before surgery. I used to have one every other day or so. The only thing I can think of is that the pain meds are keeping relaxed. So I guess I will know if I need them still here soon when I no longer need the pain meds. Here's to positive thinking and no more anxiety!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
