2 Weeks Out And Still Have Abdominal Pain

Recommended Posts

I had my first check up with surgeon yesterday and he said he's not too worried about the pain, but almost every other vsg patient I've talked to has had the pain mostly go away by this point...its not hard like a hernia, but I have severe pain in my abdomen about an inch above my biggest incision whenever I move or am standing. Surgeon says that's where he had to put a stitch underneath my skin (my muscle tissue im guessing) so its still healing...I just feel like it should be better, hope I didn't pull anything.

That happened to me too. I turned over in bed and I must have pulled something and was in alot of pain for a few days. I had my post op appt with the surgeon and he told me the same thing. I immediately pulled back on my activity and rested for a few days and took my pain meds, and the pain subsided. After that I was just really careful and not doing anything too strenuous because I realized I had internal stitches where they penetrate the muscles to do the surgery on our stomachs.

Rest and let it heal.

I am 2 weeks out and I definitely still have pain above my biggest incision. I feel like a whiny baby when I see all the posts where people bounce right back and I guess pain is relative :) Today it has felt a lot better than it has over the last few days, maybe it's getting better!

I still had pain above my largest incision at 4.5 weeks out. Remember that everyone heals differently, there's no set time at which you'll be "done" healing. Keep the incisions clean and use a good moisturizer after your steri-strips come off. If you have difficulty sleeping on your side due to incision pain, consider a body pillow. I'm now 6 weeks out and have no incision pain. You'll get there!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
