question why mushies but not liquids?

Recommended Posts

hello, i have been trying to lay low and not talk to much about my restriction so that i dont jinx myself! lol.

my question is...why are mushies easier for me that liquids? ?

in the AM (i wake at 9:30ish) i leave a Water out overnight so that its room temp and thats what i drink from. so i have 1 tiny sip of water. it goes down. another tiny sip 10 minutes later then another sip. i notice my mouth start to fill with saliva. ok the water must not be going down, i fight the urge PB and the sip sits and sits. if i drink more i will PB, so i sit.

i know from *my* past experience that it seems liquids dont start my AM off right. i have tried coffee and hot tea and they do the same thing. 1 sip will go down but when i start to drink more it just sits there.

i grab a cold yogurt and in 30 minutes can have it gone without so much as a hiccup. after the yogurt liquids are slow till later afternoon. i drink slimfast for lunch around 3. it seems the liquids dont trigger my esoph. to get moving. if i drink a shake for lunch it goes down slowly and thats all i will have. i will continue to struggle with liquids.

if i have a cup of Soup with/before lunch then i can eat a HUGE meal. this past weekend at 3 pm (this is my normal lunch time since i wake late) i had 1 chick thigh, 1 piece bread, 1 serving green Beans, 1 serving peach pie. the chick was cooked in a 'gravy' and boy did it lube me up. when we got there to pick the peaches i was struggling with my slimfast. when i sat to dinner i had several spoons of gravy like soup thinking that might be all that would go down. little did i know i would eat a full meal w/desert and finish only a few bites behind everyone else.

i still havent pb'd since my 'stupid f'n post'. i am doing the yogurt -slimfast route then 2-3 crackers before dinner (7 pmish) and i can eat a solid meal. lastnight 4-5 oz meatloaf, side garlic mashed taters with skins in it, and a small side salad. then 3 hours later a bowl of watermelon. i am a stickler about not drinking with my meals. i never ever do it. i did eat 1/2 the taters first to 'lube' me some so i didnt have to worry about a pb. i ate in under 30 mintues.

:phanvan is this just another atrophy!?!

It seems like your esophageal motility is enhanced by thicker/solid foods and sent into spasm with liquids. If that's the case, try things like Cereal for Breakfast and a salad for lunch.

cereal? sounds yummy. i would love to buy a box. i think tommorrow i will try hot cereal (yummy kashi vanilla) since i have that at home and see how that does.

i missed my dr appt. but i am gonna reschedule to talk about the hernia, the esph. spasms, the mushies and liqueds etc.

I know this is probably unnecessary, but there are thickening agents that you can add to drinks to make them more esophagus friendly. I spent quite a bit of time in and around the geriatric community a few years back and many older people can not tolerate liquids. Maybe health food or medical supply stores?

Sorry you are having a hard time, Brenda

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
