readytobeslimxoxox 23 Posted June 6, 2012 Im a little over a week into my pre op diet (will be on it for 2 weeks total) and am confused about what it actually does. Is it just to shrink your liver? Does the Protein cause your liver to shrink? Also, I feel like I'm not losing as much as I should. I've only lost 4 pounds in a week and a day. Also, what would happen if your liver isn't small enough to do the surgery? Will they make you start all over again? Ahhh this pre op diet is making me worried! herewegoagain 15 Posted June 6, 2012 When you take in very few carbs, your liver releases stored carbs in the form of glycogen. Glycogen stores increase liver size. A large liver makes it hard for surgeons to do surgery on the stomach. Good luck. In the past and occasionally now, they go in to do the surgery and can't. They suture you back up and you have to do a high Protein diet. Without the protein, your body burns muscle to feed the brain. Then, you have to go back to surgery for the actual VSG.
