Combined Gallbladder Removal?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

During my pre-op testing, I had mentioned to my PA that I had pnemonia 1 1/2 years ago and during the analysis, they had done an ultrasound of my lower right abdomen. They noted that I had gallstones.

Even though I have had no symptoms, my surgeon is recommending that I have the gallbladder removed as part of my sleeve surgery.

I am thinking that this is a better idea than possibly having a second surgery to remove my gallbladder but because this has come up at the last minute (my surgery is Tues), I'm a little worried about what it means.

I have an appointment with my PCP on Friday but I'm wondering what the risks are vs the benefits and wondering how it will affect my recovery.

Any suggestions or advice from others that had a similar situation?

My surgeon is also removing my gallbladder at the time of surgery. My ultrasound did not show any current gallstones, nor do I have symptoms...but I have a family history of gallstones. Since gallstones can be more prevalent with rapid weight loss, we decided the best course of action was to remove it as well. For me it was an easy decision, I would much rather avoid any complications and need for additional surgery in the future.

Good luck with your decision :)

Hi Van,

That's what I am thinking as well... Just a little nervous because it came up at the last minute. Is your surgery already scheduled?

Thanks for replying!

Lucky! I wish they removed mine! I am so afraid of the super painful symptoms people report on here. I am sure it will just mean another laproscopic incision and more time under so more anesthesia. It shouldn't change much. It only took 25 minutes to take out my tummy, so I am guessing a gallbladder doesn't take too long either.

They brought it up during my pre-op consultation, and was a 2 min discussion. My Nurse asked if there was a history of gallbladder issues, I said yes, then she said the dr will probably just decide to remove it as well. I said, Ok and she just marked it on the orders and away we went.

My surgery is scheduled for Monday the 11th! My overly large belly is swimming in Protein Shakes and other Clear Liquids. I'm currently trying to choke down my nectar pink grapefruit in crystal light lemonade. Do you have your date yet?

I am scheduled for Tues, June 12th! I don't have any pre-op requirements until Monday when I have to do 3 bottles of magnesium citrate, then nothing after midnight.

I would encourage you to do it.

I had mine done at the same time.

I think it's smart. :)

I think this is getting to be pretty common, and frankly it makes sense. My PCP had his gallbladder removed when he was sleeved last year. Why not go ahead and remove something that is likely need to be dealt with in the next year anyway?

Thanks All!

Your support and responses make me feel so much better about it. I'll let you know how it goes next week. Another benefit is its one less pill I'll have to take post-op.

Thanks again,

Grace

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
