Post-Op Pain Medication Question

Recommended Posts

I cannot take codeine in any type of pain medication. It gives me horrible stomach pain. Does anyone else have this problem, and if so, what type of post-op pain medication were you given? What should I ask for? :help:

I believe Vicodin is the most frequently used post-op pain reliever. It's important for you to list codeine as an allergy. It's not a rare allergy and your MD has many alternatives to relieve your pain. Don't worry!

Thanks. I am definitely going to let them know. I don't think I take Vicodin too well either, along with percocet. I wish I could remember the name of the pain-killer they gave me in the hospital after my c-section. It worked great, but the dr. would write a prescription for it for me to take home, he said I could only get it in the hospital. He told me the name, but of course I don't remember.

I am allergic to codine and and get violent stomach pain also. I am having brain freeze righ tnow. I received a liquid and I can't remember the name of it. I took it once and I had problems breathing. I should not have taken it with my bp meds or I took too much but that was the first and last time I took it. Adult strength, liquid tylenol was stong enough to knock me out. I only needed it about 4 times diffrent days. When I remember the name of the pain killer I will let you know. Good Luck

I am an RN and we use lots of pain medications to treat patients... torodol, morphine, demerol, dilaudid, MS contin, percoset, percodan, darvoset, vicodin...

Your surgeon will order the appropriate med for you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
