New York Regulations

Recommended Posts

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been hit with a backlash of dissent in recent days for his proposed ban on the sale of sodas and other sweetened drinks in containers over 16 ounces. Some critics have gone so far as to say the mayor's proposal is a "fascist" attack on American freedom. Is soda really so unhealthy that it needs to be regulated?

I think it is about time someone made a point. American capitalism is failing our health. I don't like the idea of big brother getting involved, but I am to the point that I feel something has to give. Have you ever watched TV after 6 pm? 3 out of every 4 commercials is food, candy or some other unhealthy garbage. Just tiny changes can make a big difference!

While I agree, I don't think government has a right. Imagine a family or super bowl party.while Im not a soda drinker, I also wouldn't want to pay so much extra for 16oz bottles. When I could buy a boss and some solo cups.

I travel a lot for work internationally and, comparatively, the US is out of control with portions across the board. You just can't get it. And people would look at you crazy of you asked. It's always been so much easier for me to eat normal portions when I travel outside the states. I could see how, if it was adopted broadly, it could impact people positively.

So, for me, I say cut the portions. Nobody needs it and everyone else around the world survives just fine without it. I've heard people say that "being able to get a 60 oz soda is what this country is about". I must've missed that memo. For me, and just for me, "freedom" isn't about a super sized meal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
