I'm seriously getting pissed off at how little I can eat!!! And I'm still trying to gage when I'm full. By The time im feelin it my food is up to my esophagus and it hurts like a biatch!!! What's the point of even going out to eat of I can only enjoy less than 10 bites?? My 1year old can eat more than me and that's a damn shame!!

Ok... Stop and take a breath... How far out are you? I was pretty upset when I was about 2 weeks out as I had gone out to eat with my family and was still on liquids. It was a stupid idea and I cried through most of dinner. Now I go out to eat with my family every weekend I always order a kids meal of like steak or grilled chicken. I normally can not finish the whole thing. As for your full feeling try and eat slow and chew really well... I actual will hiccup and that's how I know I'm full but it didn't start happening till I was a little farther out... Maybe a month or two. I am 8 months out and I eat pretty much anything I want at this point. I am in my goal range and I have lost 100lbs since my sleeve in October 140lbs all together. I felt the same way in the beginning about how little I could eat, but I wouldn't change anything now. Good luck and you will be able to eat a bit more as the swelling goes down.

Smiles!

I really don't go out to eat anymore. When people I know visit and want to go out, I always get something healthy and yummy and move it around on my plate while I get them to talk. This way they don't notice how little I actually ate. I take tiny tiny bites so that it looks like I am taking lots of them. Then, I bring home my extras and eat it for 3 or more days (if I don't send it off with my husband). I get really frustrated with it sometimes too. I miss big mouth filling bites and enjoying a lot of something. That was most of our problem though wasn't it? It is the most frustrating part I agree, and you aren't alone there.

I was really wondering how this would work for me. I'm a bit of a foodie..well was. So I like great food & great friends and family too. I go out to Breakfast with my mom once a week and with a group of girls at least once a month. I love the fellowship. I hope I don't start to hate it.

I am only two weeks out so this is not from my own experience but I spoke to a number of sleevers and bypass friends who had the surgery years ago and this was their biggest complaint - not being able to eat as much as they used to. Even ten years out, one friend cannot get an entire appetizer down in one sitting. However, not anyone of them would go back. This is what got us in trouble before.

Ladylvy..yes!! I miss my big ol endless portions!!! And yes, that was the problem right there!! Going out to eat is so heavily tied to going out and being social so this will be a work in progress to see how to make it all work for me. My husband gets back next week and wanted to go to Red Lobster to Celebrate. Maybe I'll get a baby plate and have him give me one piece of everything on his plate. Lol!!

Um.. that's kind of the point.. of sleeve -- to force you into compliance when you still "want" to eat more..

You're early on in this journey, so just take your time and have patience - it'll all be worth it in the end. I'm still pre-op, but I'm totally excited about my surgery and can't wait. I wish you the best of success in your journey!

This is one case where having the band will help me out when Im able to move on to regular foods. I got used to eating small bites and taking food home. And I dont ever really remember being mad that I couldnt eat a whole lot- I mean, thats the point to having WLS is to reduce portion sizes to help us lose weight.

I've been told that the little burp we get during/after a meal is the body's way of telling you that you don't need to have any more, so there's likely something to that.

I hear you! I'm 6 weeks post op and still eat like a little bird. People don't believe me until they see me eat, then comes either the burp or little gurgles from the throat. It's really kinda gross.

I have never been a burpy girl, so this is new to me!! 

Im ok with the birdy portions, as long as it's food and not mushy crap and broth. If I never have broth again, that suits me fine!!

LOL

I'm here now so imma just take this process in and roll with it!! I do love to see the numbers on the scale go down and like a wise woman said...."this too shall pass".. : )

At 4 weeks out, your eating isn't normal, but it will get better. Your portion size will become less freaky and more normal (normal in a healthy way ie matching the portion sizes our NUTs tell us about rather than the multiple portions that restaurants actually serve). It's weird that a normal portion of meat is the size of a deck of cards (4 ounces), but restaurants always want to sell us 12 and 16 ounce cuts of meat.< /p>

I'm 9 months out from my surgery, and I do end up eating out quite a bit. I can usually find something on the menu good to eat that is high in Protein and low in carbs. If I can't, I order something that I can modify.

Last Saturday, I modified. I ordered a french dip. It came on a sub-like bun and with an order of fries. I ate the roast beef and dipped it in the au jus, but I didn't eat the bun and only had 1 or 2 fries. When I was done, it looked like I hadn't had any food because the bun was still whole, and the fries were still there. The au jus was probably higher in fat and salt than I normally eat, but I didn't dip every bite. I didn't take my leftovers home (it was all carbs). I ended up eating about 4 ounces of the meat.

The first time I tried to eat out, I ordered a cup of chili. I couldn't finish even half of it, but I enjoyed what I did eat. Plus, it took me so long to eat that I was eating at the same pace as everyone else.

What I found helpful for me is that I will stop eating for a bit after I've had about 8 bites. I just stop and participate in the conversation. I give my body time to react to the food. It keeps me from overeating and getting uncomfortable.

Be creative in how you order -- look at appetizers and Soups. Plan to have some leftovers to take home. Share your food. I recently ordered a Soup that turned out to be so good that I encouraged my daughter to try it. She had several bites too. I still didn't finish my Soup, but I was still able to enjoy it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
