6 Months Post Op Question..

It seems like my nutritionist and doctors put a lot of emphasis that the first 6 months is the "window of opportunity" for losing weight and after that it will pretty much come to a stop. I will be 3 months out on Thursday and Have lost only 50 lbs. If this is the case I only have 3 months left of losing weight. Does the weight loss really stop after 6 months or does it just continue at a slower pace?

NO!! They call the first 6 months your "honeymoon" phase, weight falls off really easily. As someone told me you can fart and lose months the first 6 months haha. After 6 months your body starts getting used to the smaller amount of calories you are consuming and the weight might just start slowing down. Thats why the first 6 months you want to bust your @ss!! Do everything you can to maxamize your weight loss results. You will probably have to working a little harder after 6 months. But most people make goal in a year and a half, so there is no way you stop losing after 6 months. (hope not anyway i am coming up on my 6 month mark)

I sure hope not, cause, I will be six months next week, and I've lost 65, but still have 40 to go. I will be very interested in what they say, by the way, I have not lost a pound in the past month. EEEEkkk

Also remember, the bigger you are when you start the more weight you take off at first. I am half way to goal, i lost the first half in 5 months, not sure if i will lose the last 75 in 5 months. I will be happy if i can do it in 7.

I am 8 months out now and my weight loss has slowed down but definitely not stopped!! For me, the first 5 months were the easiest... months 6 and 7 I stalled for most of it... but now I'm dropping 1.5-3 a week... I doubt that will keep up for long but I am definitely still losing!

My surgeon told me that most of his patients lose a hundred pounds the first year... i've lost 118 so I'm happy!

Thanks for all the replys! It's good to know that there is hope and this isn't all that there is. I have been working my butt off I'm at the gym for 2 hours 5 days a week. SOmetimes I think I should have saved that for after the 6 month mark because it will be harder to work harder then what I'm doing now if that makes sense.

Just wanted to share... I DID wait until very recently (so my 7-8 months out) before stepping into a gym... it is NOT all that much easier!! I've lost strength for sure. My endurance is a bit better (on the treadmill) but not by much. I wish that I had started working out earlier because then maybe I would have maintained my muscle, instead of now where I am working to build it back up.

I don't think it is a set time. I think you determine it by your habits, how much you have lost - muscle mass, etc.

Try to find contentment that if you do not stop the good habits, you will still lose weight...if you only lose 3lbs a month that is 36 lbs in a year...where would you be in a year without the sleeve?

Take this 6 month point to make sure you are still avoiding liquids with meals, chewing small portions, waiting, and remember- yo dont have to eat till you are full, training yourself to walk away satiated but not full is still a useful tool.

About 4 years ago I lost 100 lbs within a year by counting calories and working out. I'm assuming that would be no different then what I can do with the sleeve but it will just be easier because I have a tool to help me with my eating. Luckily for me I have it all tracked on calorie-count.com so I can compare how fast I lost the weight 4 years ago to how I've lost the weight with the sleeve. I've averaged about 18 a month with the sleeve and about 7 from the first weight loss attempt. I should quit worrying I guess!

Aprildawn, I'm 9 months out and still losing. Like others have said, it's not at the same pace, but I'm now seeing the results of my workouts more than I did before. I weigh now what you weighed at surgery day, so my BMI was quite a bit higher than yours...which means I've lost weight very quickly. I too stalled/slowed down for all of months 7 and 8, but I've added more exercise to my routine and the NSV's just keep on coming. I lost 3 pants sizes during that stall, lol.

Good luck. Just keep exercising and following your plan and you'll get to goal much more quickly than you could possibly dream you will!! :)

      Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

      The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

        Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
