Dr. Atkinson performed my surgery May of 2012. He was great, no complications at all. He also repaired hiatal hernia. Everything so far has been amazing. I am happy with my results and my journey. I really like Dr. Grace also, he does all of the office follow up visits and Karen the dietician. She is very helpful during the first few months when it is the hardest. Make sure you have her email so you can send her questions if you have any concerns. Best of luck. Let me know if you have any more questions.

If you dont mind me asking what kind of insurance did you have/ what did it cover?

Did you finance the rest through Dr Atkinson's office?

I have HPN and I use southwest medical. If you meet their requirements, they will pay 5k towards the procedure. You have to pay 11k. I paid part and used care credit for part. They requirements are you have to be ascertain bmi and or have medical factors from your weight. You also have to meet with a dietician for a few months. Your primary care doctor is the one to talk to. I am 10 months out and it was the best decision I ever made

I also have HPN and am using Southwest Medical along with Dr.Atkinson, will be completing my 3 month weight management with Southwest this week. I havent gained, but I havent lost either, is this going to hamper HPN's decision to approve me for surgery?

I used HPN. My weight went up and down. It did not stop me from being allowed to get the surgery. You have to meet the BMI and or have comorbidities.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
