Band To Sleeve Revision - Kaiser Fontana?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to post to see if there might be anyone out there that has had a revision done and gone through Kaiser Fontana?

I was banded back in November 2002 (self-pay) and have just now started the process to get a revision done by Kaiser in Fontana.

I have already had my Upper GI and Dr. Fedorka reviewed it and determined that I am a good candidate for the revision in one surgery after I complete the Options classes and the other requirements.

It would be nice if all Kaiser's had the same requirements for WLS and it seems that Kaiser Fontana seems to take the longest.

Kaiser seems to preach similar information from site to site, but in the long run, I believe each surgeon does what he feels is best. I had a lot of inflammation in my esophagus due to the band slipping one year ago. I was told I would have to wait one full year before a revision could be performed. Outside of a divorce, this has been the toughest year of my life. I have gained weight, and now that I have been on a 1200 cal diet for 5 weeks, I am not losing. I definitely know how to count cals and use MyFitnessPal to log, so I am doing 1000-1200/day. I wish you the best. He didn't make me do the Options class, but I work where there is a large bariatric program, so I took their six months of classes. I figured it could only help. I did all the pre-op labs, EKG, chest x-ray and psych eval. My surgery is June 27 in South Bay. That is 30 miles from my house in the San Fernando Valley. Good luck. I wish they could have removed the band and done the revision at the same time, but it is what it is.

Joyce,

I agree that surgeon does what he thinks is best and I won't argue that at all. I believe that the Options classes will be beneficial, it's more the insane waits after the classes that I find ridiculous.

I am trying to decide what I should do as far as removing the lapband now then getting through Options, etc. and having the Sleeve done. Or having it all done at once after Options. I am a little bit scared that I will wait the time to get through Options and get surgery scheduled and then when I'm under the surgeon will find so much scar tissue from my 6 previous abdominal surgeries that he will only be able to remove the band and then I'll have to wait to heal, etc. before he can do the sleeve.

I have requested that they make me an appointment with the surgeon so that I can discuss these concerns with him and make an informed decision re: what to do?

I don't know what to do.

Congratulations on having your surgery date and good luck!

Kirstyn

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
