I am a newbie to the site and I must say that I am excited to be here. I just decides to have WLS about two months ago, and now I am getting a little scared because things are going quicker than I anticipated. I just met with my surgeon for the first time on May 21st. On that day I had to go to the lab to take blood work, and my surgeon also set up my first appt with the nutrionalist and I also have my first support group meeting to go to on Tuesday the 5th of June. Now I just received a call from the hospital this morning to set up an appt to take my sonogram. I am so nervous because I was under the impression that everything takes 6-8 months to do and set up. What do you guys think, does it seems like things are moving fast for me? Thanks in advance for your responses.

Well, I met with my Dr on March 27th and will be having my surgery this coming Monday. Yes, its scary and quicker than I thought and boy have I gone back and forth rethinking my decision. However, I have had a BMI of 40+ for over 5 years which means that nothing I have done in the past has worked. Its time for me to step up and make a life change so I can have a longer life.

Well, it really depends on your insurance and/or if you are self-pay. I know self-pays at my surgeon's office go from first appt to surgery in about 2 months. I had insurance and I went from my info session (which I decided to go to on a whim) to surgery in 5 months.

If the speed is bothering you, you can always slow it down. They may be pushing to get these tests done so that they can submit for insurance, which can take awhile. You ultimately control the entire process. I hated the waiting that I had to do, but I know that everyone is different.

On another note, welcome :) And congrats on starting your journey!!

I first spoke with my Dr. On May 27th and I am scheduled for June 14th. I couldn't be happier it was scheduled so quickly. But if the timing is too quick for you, I am sure you could request a later date.

I am also thrilled to be post op during the summer because I find it much easier to eat smaller quantities of food during the warmer months.

I have a 90 day plan that I have to follow for my insurance to pay. I am 30 days into this now and I have gotten all my "ducks" in a row already. This week will be my cardiac clearance, pulmonary clearance appointments. I have had the seminar, surgeon consult, 1st nurtrition class, and psych eval all done already. I have to just finish with the other 2 PCP visits and get my letter of medical necessity and we can submit it all to my insurance. I had a list of things that had to be done before they would give auth for it. I am like everyone I have read on here....a little nervous but very excited. Too many diets too many pounds lost and gained ready for this journey. Anyone from AZ that has been thru this that I can connect with to be my mentor as I think that is a great idea. Ever hear that phrase so excited I can't hardly sit still?? That is me! :)

I agree with everyone here. It is YOUR journey. If you need time to get your head wrapped around it, then set a surgery date for when you are comfortable. I went to the seminar and had my apps and paperwork completed. Now just awaiting insurance approval. I am tentatively scheduled for August 20, the end of summer school. Personally, I cannot wait.

Don't be scared, but be sure you want this change. I went to the meeting for the Gastric Slleve in Dec. near Christmas and was sleeved May 14. I would have been sleeved if United Healthcare moved faster. I got nervous, too. If you are worried about pain, don't be. I was scared and nothing hurt, except that damn catheter! Otherwise, life was good!

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses, and positive words. I am 110% sure that this is what I want and even though I am a little nervous I am excited and can't wait. So after I finish all the tests and everything, I will take any date that they decide to give me. I wish everyone well on their journey also. It really feels good to finally take control of my health and do something just for me. God Bless you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One piece of advice I was given and I will pass it on to you. The first year, it is 80% the surgery, 20% you. After that, it is 20% the surgery, 80% you. I am trying to remember that day by day, as I change my eating and exercise habits. The most successful people who have been sleeved changed their lifestyles after surgery. The ones who failed, usually didn't.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
