Has Anyone Had An Abscess After Vsg?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on 5/1/12. Absolutely no problems whatsoever until this past weekend. I had sharp pain in my left shoulder and low grade fever. I called my dr. and he sent me for CT scan which showed no leak but the start of an abscess. The dr. prescribed an antibiotic called Levequin. I take 1 pill per day for 10 days. I took first pill yesterday and spiked a fever and wanted only to sleep. Today the pain is different. It feels like it has moved to a different area in my shoulder and radiates around to the front of my stomach area. Still painful when I breathe and fever. Has anyone experienced an abscess and what kind of treatment did you have?

Beware of Levequin. It causes tendonitis. I took it for an upper respiratory infection a few months ago, and I'm still working my way back to normal. It made everything hurt from my feet up to my knees, and my right wrist, too. The pain got better when I stopped taking it, but it was nearly a month before I felt nearly normal. My left knee still gets stiff. :( It did clear up the infection, though.

I'm pre-op, so I don't know about abscesses, but I am wishing you WELL!

I was also on Levequin in February for pneumonia. It's a powerful antibiotic! I had been on a full 2 week course of Biaxin which did NOTHING for my pneumonia. The Levequin started helping within 2 days and cleared it right up. I didn't really experience any significant side-effects, and was grateful for the improvement!

If your fever persists, please let your doctor know right away. You may require a different antibiotic or further investigation!

Thanks for your input. I do seem to be getting better each day. The fever is lower each day and the pain is moving to different areas each day. I was so happy to hear I didn't have a leak but surprised others haven't had an abscess. It sounded common after any type of surgery on your stomach. Going on day 4 out of 10 for the antibiotic treatment. I see my dr on Wednesday. I have no desire to eat anything but have been pushing in the Water. Hopefully this was just a blip on my radar and will get back on track ASAP.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
