Has anyone heard of having your pre-op lab work done on the same morning

as your surgery? Im scheduled for surgery in Cancun on th 15th, with Dr Veboonen

and was informed yesterday, that all of my lab work, pre-op tests will be done that

same morning. Does that sound odd? Thought they may need a day to make sure

everything is normal and good to go before surgery...Really getting scared now!

That was the same question that i had too. Here is the USA they do the labs at lest 1 week before surgery, But in MX it looks like they do everyhting on the same day. I am guessing that they have the lab with the hospital and they get all the results with hours. N here they had to send you blood some where else.

That's how it is in the DOminican Republic as well. I'm having some of the lab work here in the US to save time and money... My surgery is scheduled for the first week of July in DR.

I had my lap band done in Mexico and that's how they did it there. If there's something really wrong, they won't do surgery. I also had my gallbladder out in the US last September and they took my blood right before my surgery, and a urine sample. It was probably an hour or two before my actual surgery. Don't worry!

Ok, now I'm feeling a little better..Thanks guys! Love the amount of info and encouragement

I'm finding on this site. I understand some people have to go through Pych evaluation, and classes

before surgery. Being a self pay in Mexico, this is it for me..

TerriTravel,

As I said, I did my band in Mexico (and will do the same with the sleeve). I actually contacted a bariatric surgery center in my area and they accept business from people who have surgery elsewhere. My doctor told me that they'd be stupid not to because of the number of people who go to Mexico or wherever to do their surgeries. They have a fabulous psychiatrist there who has had weight loss surgery. My insurance covers 80% of my visits with her (so odd since I have that specific weight loss clause!) It also covers consults with a nurse at the weight loss center. I would check into it---the counseling has been the best thing I ever did in relation to the band. (HATE the band!)

Best of luck to you!

Erika

Erika, You are a genius! Never, would I have thought of checking with the local WLS about counseling. I've been afraid of someone talking me out of going to Mexico. I 've heard the hardest part of WLS is your own head..I will definitely check into it!

Terri

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
