Pain And Nausea 11 Weeks Out

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on March 15. Over the past week or so, I've been getting nauseous after everything I eat. The only exception is Water. I didn't really have this problem beforehand. Also, with some foods, including Protein Shakes, I get a very sharp pain in my stomach (actual stomach, below the sternum). It goes away after a few seconds but it's starting to scare me. I cannot see my doctor until Monday. Anybody else have something similar? I'm actually scared to eat right now as I feel so uncomfortable afterwards.

I have not had that problem, but I have read many threads where people share the same issues. Try using the search functionality in the upper right corner on a web page.

From what I remember, people suggest usings a ppi (acid reducer). Also, be sure that you are chewing your food REALLY well. More than you did pre-op. And, of course, take smaller bites.

I was having a mild version of the same problem. Assuming you are eating very slow and not eating too much, try a PPI such as Prilosec (Omeprazole). My doctor wrote a prescription for a 90 day supply before my surgery, and I didn't think I needed them, but they definitely helped when I started to take them just on a hunch.

I am starting to have a lot of problems with food. I was doing ok with tuna and chicken mixed with mayo, but today, I could hardly choak it down :( I chew slowely and a lot. I eat slowly and still it feels like a brick in my sleeve. It did not used to feel that way. I don't feel it backing up or not making it into my sleeve, just once it is there, brick city. It seems like almost everything I eat makes me feel a bit ill.

I am going back to jell-o, popsicles and Soup for a few days. Maybe something upset my sleeve and it just needs a rest. I don't know, but I know this is not working, so time for a change. I have been feeing tired and weak also. I take a ppi two to three times a day, use dairy ease pills when I eat any dairy, take my Vitamins and added B-12, Calcium, etc. Maybe I will try some yogurt tonight and see how that goes down. I am in my 7th week from surgery.

@pdxman - I did but almost all of the people discussed the nausea immediately post-surgery, which I did not have. This is something that started out of the blue a week ago.

I am taking presciption Prilosec as a PPI and my doc didn't want to increase it as I'm already taking a large amount. I was diagnosed with GERD many years pre-surgery. And as I said, this is something that just started.

Also, I have gone back to mainly liquids but even those spark pain and nausea. When I do eat solids I eat very slowly and chew. However, after the second bite the nausea starts up again.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
