2 Very Different Vsg Philosophies -- What's Yours?

Just another food for thought: I could be wrong, but I don't think that the Protein Shakes, like the Premier Protein that costco has or like Muscle Milk, are actually supposed to be Meal Replacement shakes. I don't think they will give you the complete nutrition that you need over the long term if one just drinks those instead of meals. There are meal replacement shakes that you can buy, but they are fairly expensive. I think HMR and Optifast are meal replacement shakes, but many others are not. Also, I don't think there is much if any Fiber in shakes and other things that your body needs so it wouldn't surprise me if someone declined in health if they were on the Protein shakes longterm.

Ive had to attend several pre and post up nutrition CLASSES...actual classes in a huge hospital auditorium with at least 50 to 100 people! BEST THING EVER...so many questions and answers. and although there are Protein options for every phase of the diet it was stressed over and over that they rather us EAT our calories and nutrients than to drink it. Protein Shakes are recommended as a supplement later, to get closer to the protein requirement.

I agree that you should start eating regular foods as soon as your sleeve can tolerate them. You have lost 85% of your stomach; that was the purpose of the surgery in the first place. There is no way you can continue eating the quantity of food you ate before VSG. If you overeat, you will know! Your body is made to function with liquids AND food. Protein Shakes should not be a meal replacement unless you are still on liquids since you aren't eating food anyway. I mentioned this thread to my doctor and he was appalled that someone would say to stay on that Protein Shake plan for so long. He said you are asking for trouble in the long term with your instestines and could caus IBS (Irratable Bowel Syndrome). Your goal is to eat the right foods as soon as you can tolerate, and move into a healthier diet and lifestyle. I personally am on the right track with my new eating habits and very close to my goal, and couldn't be healthier. I love my sleeve!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
