So I googled...reasons why you shouldn't have bariatric surgery...mind you I have already had it :) but I am a research freak. So anyhoo...new study shows that bariatric patients have a greater likelyhood of breaking a bone due to the lack of Calcium. This study was for people who were far out from surgery. I just read it, but I am sure they were taking about bypass...but hey I thought I would share.

I take Calcium twice a day to hopefully keep this from happening. :)

This is why many docs recommend high quality calcium citrate, the body absorbs better then calcuim carbonate.

Also keep in mind that taking PPIs reduces Calcium absorption, and some WLS patients end up needing them for quite a while.

What are PPI's?

Proton Pump Inhibitors are to decrease stomach acid production. Prilosec and Nexium are examples.

Also read a study the other day stating that the older people get that Calcium supplement causes an increased risk of heart attack and doesn't do alot for osteoporosis.

On the same topic I wondered about excess Calcium and heart blockage. I just had a calcium cardiac test that showed a little blockage in my left descending artery - sure enough a few days later I saw a medical blurb on TV about calcium supplements possibly leading to calcium deposits in the arteries. The blurb left it completely open and never gave a definitive answer, and neither did any of my online research either.

So is taking more calcium citrate leading to possibly heart problems down the road?

The doc started me on a baby aspirin a day to try and reverse it. My cholesterol is already low at 133 and 64 triglycerides so nothing to do diet wise. I didn't know about the possible calcium supp. / heart blockage concern then so I didn't ask him.

Exercise, Krill or good quality fishoils, Vit D3 , with a balance of zinc and magnesium, a baby asa, and Healthy balanced diet are said to be the best ways to stop and/or reverse blockages. Brocoli has lots of Calicium! Remembering not to over exercise. Men and Women should have both testosterone and estrogen levels checked. Also remember that D3 is not so deficient near the equator and more deficient in Canada = sunlight exposure. With decrease d3 some studies show higher depression and heart disease.

My doc told me that PPIs do not stop Calcium Citrate from being absorbed, just the Calcium Carbonate. She wanted me to take a PPI because of my RI med (methotextrate).

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
