Sleeved 5/16 and was having back pain and ended up having a hard time breathing = 5 days back in the hospital. It turns out my back pain wasn't my hiatal hernia, it's my spleen. (liver was slightly swollen, white cell count and liver enzymes were high but normal now)

The dr said sometimes the stomach shares a blood supply with a small portion of the spleen and stapling off the stomach cuts the blood supply to that part of the spleen as well; the spleen will scar and shrink down at that part, the rest works and not a big deal.

Has anyone else gone through this or even heard of this???

so random.....But yes I had this! I just had surgery on July 30th and I did experience this. weird. Actually 10 percent of my spleen was already dead so the surgery caused me to lose 10 percent more which the Dr. said would not cause a problem in the future. Just the back and shoulder pain.

Happy it's not horrible enough to remove (: my pain only lasted about a week, hope. Yours goes away just as fast!

My spleen was "glued" to my stomach and the Dr had to separate them before he could cut the stomach. No additional complications just a lot of Bach pain for awhile....

So thankful to find this post! I was told that this had happened to me as well. The doc was so "matter of fact" about it I didn't know what to say!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
