4 Days Postop-Not Getting Enough Protein

Recommended Posts

Felt pretty good when I came home from the hospital on Sunday. Yesterday was an ok day. I was able to get in about half of my Protein and most of my fluids. I had one episode of nausea, but never threw up. Today has been a big struggle. I have had a really hard time getting anything down. All the Protein Shakes now taste sickly sweet and Water tastes funny too. I tried the Unjury chicken Soup and felt awful after eating that. Thankfully I am not feeling hungry but I know I need some nutrients. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I was the same way- still don't get all of my Protein in- but the Unjury broth is best taken with an acid reducer prior to drinking it- it was the only way I could get it down without the pain :)

Best of luck to you!!!

Unjury chicken broth has been my life saver as warm is what I tolerate best. You have to be careful not too overheat the Water as I guess it can make the texture weird. I actually use my meat probe thermometer and make sure it is 130 degrees or less before I add the Unjury to the cup of hot water.

I am scheduled for June 14th, but I ordered the Unjury chicken Soup today to have for when I get home. What acid reducer are finding is helpful?

I am 2 weeks out and I am still not getting my Protein in. I do a 30 gram shake in the morning but that's all I can handle... I am soooooooo tired of shakes. I know once I can do mushies I'll get more in so I am not sweatin it right now.

Water tastes weird to me too for several days post op... But now it's fine. Hang in there! :-)

I have to admit that I cheated today. I just couldn't drink any more shakes. Everything tastes so sickly sweet, I just can't stand it. So, I decided to try some cottage cheese. I didn't eat much, only 2-3oz, but I felt so much better after I got something in my system. It tasted so good and didn't hurt my stomach at all. This may be my new staple! One good bit of news today is that I finally lost all of the Water weight I gained in the hospital. Now to start on the real weight loss! Can't wait!

I would suggest getting Unjury unflavored Protein to supplement. You can put it into Soups, yogurt, etc because some of the mushy/puree food does not have enough protein without supplementing with 1 or more Protein Shakes. If you can't stand the shakes, than at least try and get some protein in with the food you can eat.

I have been taking Nexium.

My doctor just started me on Nexium, as my acid reflux has been TERRIBLE. How long before you felt relief??

I know all surgeons are different but my surgeon doesn't even talk about Protein until the third week post-op and he doesn't start talking numbers in Protein until you're starting the 5th week post-op.

I lived on strained progresso Soups in the first two weeks. I'd often mix a strained Soup with some chicken or beef broth and was taking in an oversized mug of warm liquid in a sitting. In the second week I added in some thicker pureed but still liquid things like spit pea.

If the protein is not making your tummy happy yet, maybe try backing it off a little and not worrying to much about hitting a number? It's hard because no one (including me) ever wants to suggest that you go against your surgeon's guidelines. My surgeon flat out said I had enough Vitamins and stored energy that I didn't need to worry about anything in the first two weeks. Others will swear this leads to stalls but my loss has been pretty steady. I've been slower in the last two months because I've been a lazy-bones, haven't been exercising like I should and letting the pointless carbs sneak back into my mouth! Darned Cheez-itz!

I'm waiting to go in at 1 to see my dr 2 week out I tried mushy yesterday. Feeling the same as you can't wait to eat mushy. I too don't get enough Protein and it hurts to even get mushy the. Nexium isn't working will find out more in a min. I have been turned off on this site. People scare ya about lossing hair and stuff.

I used these:

http://www.amazon.com/Natures-Best-Isopure-Zero-drinks/dp/B0012NZ9U0

You can get your liquid and your Protein in one drink. Each bottle has 40 grams of Protein. I drank two a day.

Basically you just have to suck it up for awhile. Things get better as you introduce more solid foods.

i see my nutritionist and surgeon weekly for first 6 weeks and then im made a custom eating plan and schedule. Protein or supplements are not going to be a topic until 3 months post op and back to a normal eating pattern. I do however use the strawberry sorbet Unjury powder in my crystal light lemonade with lots and lots of ice...it tastes soooooo good and i personally feel better about the protein. I also mix greek yogurt with fruity baby foods! GREAT SOURCE of Protein, sometimes 15 to 20g. I try because im so super active and I havent had any days where i feel exhausted and dont really want any. GOOD LUCK to you all!!

Did better yesterday by eating just a few ozs of cottage cheese. Then today I tried making up my Protein Shake with Water and crushed ice instead of with milk and fruit. Much better...not nearly as sweet. Plus that gave me a third of my Protein requirement. I am still taking the nexium but I haven't had any acid reflux yet. Tomorrow is my one week post op appt with my Dr. Hopefully the scales will have moved down again. I was 218 right before surgery and came home from the hospital at 233. (Dang fluid). I weighed this am at it was 212. I will be so glad when I make it back into the 100's!!!!!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
