Recommended Posts

Ok I did not want to go to Mexico to have my surgery done, but it seems that my insurance does not want to approve it for me in the US. So my new question to you is how many had surgery in Mexico will you share your experience please.

I did 8 days ago and it was phenomenal. I started down the path because I was told I wasn't covered by insurance. 10 days before my surgery date I was then told insurance would cover me in the US. But you now what? I was so comfortable with my decision I went anyway and self paid! I did a number of videos and have been blogging if you're interested. Gastricsleeve4me.blogspot.com

Did the insurance company say anything about not covering you for complications (if any) when you choose to go to Mexico rather than wait for the insurance company? I have Aetna and am in the process of being approved. Lots of i's to dot and t's to cross before you are sure of the approval. The co pay is nearly as much as going to Mexico so am very tempted to just do that. The aftercare insurance thing is all that is stopping me.

I did. I had my surgery in Tijuana, Mexico on the 27th of April. My trip was great! It was smooth sailing's.. everything went as planned and the language barrier was no problem for me either. I was worried about that, but it seems like enough of the hospital staff understood and spoke English, but a few.

I didn't even bother with the insurance company this time. I did back in 2000 and was denied and it was so heart breaking for me so I cut them out the process completely. I figured my life, my rules, my way.. I'm not going to let some insurance company dictate my happiness and needs. Especially when I'm working on a healthier me.. I wanted no road blocks and supervised diets before a "maybe" approval.

Do your research as to which doctor is best for you and go for it.. No looking back.. At least that's how I feel.. Pre-op and Post-op I've lost a total of 42lbs in a month and I couldn't be happier right now...

United Healthcare the plan that my husbands job offers does not cover any weight loss surgery. So I was really disappointed in that because I know United Healthcare does cover it in other plans.

Nikki82 who did you go to? Yes thanks for sharing!!!!

I went to Dr. Garcia in Tijuana. Everything went wonderfully and smooth I'd recommend he and his staff to anyone. I believe the website is called WWW.OBESITYSOLUTIONSINTERNATIONAL.COM

My surgery is scheduled for aug 3rd with Dr Garcia as well & I couldn't be happier with my decision. Just about a month ago, I was where you are....did not want to go to Mexico & was looking into insurance covering it. The plan I have has an exception, no WLS coverage no matter what. My husband is on the verge of getting a job where his ins would cover it....so I was gonna stick it out.

Then did some research & realized my copays & deductible would be most as much PLUS the hoops I'd have to jump through....all while my health is suffering.

So, I became addicted to this board....you will find so much support & info here. There is also a Self-pay Mexico forum....you should join us there!

I know it's not what we may have imagined, going to another country for surgery....but I have complete peace with my decision !

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
