My Self-Imposed Preop Diet.

Recommended Posts

Today was day 1, & my stomach is a little cranky. A little bit of the runs. Energy is low, and I feel a little shaky. I so wanted to cheat but I think I'm through the worst of it today.

For Breakfast I had a Protein shake made with Water, it was kinda yucky.

For lunch I mixed it with chocolate slim fast, which was much better. Had same for dinner.

Cals: 740, carbs: 59, fat: 15, protein: 95..

Water: 70 oz.

I really hope I can keep motivated till sleeve-day.

I hope you had more to eat/drink today than just the Protein shakes! My pre-op diet is a mix of 2 shakes a day, plus SF pudding, SF Jello, SF applesauce, Gatorade, popsicles, broth and oatmeal (not over 80 calories though). Are you eating similar things or just doing the shakes?

you can have SF Jello and popsciles too....I have a 14-day required diet, but I started it a week early....the first 3 days were ok...day 4 I felt the wall approaching, day 5 I gave in to Taco Bell, and put myself in a food coma for 4 hours...your body feels ick when you go 4 day cleaning it then eat regular food....

Got back on track on Saturday, and was challenged today, but I'm still on it!!

my doctor allows me 4-5 Protein shakes a day along with SF Jello and popsciles and beef or chicken broth....I'm to eat something every 2 to 2.5 hours....so when my stomach growls, I reach for something..

I've been staying at 800 cals per day

This is my first day also. My NUT said I could mix my Protein Shake with sugar free silk almond milk Only 35 calories per cup. Makes the shake much better.

Looks like you did good! Mine was supposed to be around 650 calories with at least 70 g Protein, less than 60 g carbs & less than 15 g fat. I didn't have a fatty liver, so I could've done regular food, but I was going through final exams at the time and I didn't want to weigh & measure food that much, so I stuck mainly to Protein shakes. I did sometimes have a few slices of deli ham or SF Jello, but I counted everything toward my calories even though I know some doctors don't count the SF Jello toward calories.

Anyway, it seems like you're off to a great start! It is much harder to get through the pre-op diet than to follow the plan after surgery - at least it was for me! Keep it up!! :-)

I was on an eating less diet for about 12 weeks and did 1 day of liquid the day before my surgery. ;)

Thanks. My doctor does not have any pre op diets, but I want to be sure I can do the liquid diet after the surgery, plus being 650, every pound I lose before lessens chances of complications, and will make recovery easier.

Today was my first liquid day, too! Little rough this evening, but I'll make it. 3 nasty BariEssential shakes (2 with skim milk and 1 with water), 2 s/f popsicles, 64 oz. Crystal Lite, 32 oz Water and waaaay too many thought bubbles of the things I can no longer eat (at least I mentally pushed the thoughts out of the way - normally I would give in!).

... and on another note, I've lost count of the times I've had to potty today but at least I've not had any other bathroom issues! Whew!!

Yeah, I hear you, I was unloading a lot of Fluid too. I always get very diuretic on low carb diets. I will probably lose 20 this week in Water alone, which will make my swollen joints feel better so I can do more when working out.

Hey Patrick, brother, you will do great. One thing to keep in mind though, your post op diet will be pretty restrictive. You won't be able to consume the nutrients & Protein your body needs for a while. I would consider adding some lean meats (like fish) to you're diet, and maybe even a high quality multi Vitamin. I love your drive and dedication....... You are an inspiration.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
