How Do You Determine Your Goal Weight?

Recommended Posts

This was never discussed with my doctor... I'm 50 and 5'3" and have no idea what is realistic for my age... Current weight is 261. Ideas?

My nutritionist and doctor determined my goal weight. It's so easy for someone to look at your height and weight and say... You should be THIS!!! Not the way to go. We are all different shapes, frames, builds, etc.... Per HealthStatus.com, a woman your height should be 112-140lbs. My height (5'9) should be between 135 and 168lbs.... there is NOOOOO way that is possible for me! My doctor evaluated everything from my family history, blood type, muscle mass, etc.. and determined my goal weight would be 200lbs which I am thrilled with. I was a 3 sport athlete in school and graduated weighing 230lbs. Of course that was 20 years ago. LOL I am not meant to be thin nor do I want to be. I desire to keep my curves and lose the excess. I would be happy at 230 again but I this is a journey and I trust that when my body is ready to stop losing it will.

Thanks Barrbdoll! Good to know! I can't imagine weighing 112 - I think I was in grade school the last time I saw that number... When I met my husband 15 years ago, I was 145 and I can live with that again. Kudos to you for listening to your body!

I'm close to your age and same height. I'm hoping for 135-145lbs myself.

When I was young i stayed between 120-130lbs but now that Im a little older

and dont feel the need to please anyone but myself, I'll settle for a few

more pounds..Barbdoll is right, we're all different go until you feel comfortable.

I'm 5'3" - I know people that are 5'3" and get away with weighing 105 pounds, and I look better at about 130-135 any less I look gaunt because I am built solid and muscular.

Then again I thought for a while if I could only be 200 again, I would be so happy.

I'm about the same as you, only 56 years old. I can't imagine weighing 145! 195 is my first goal, then 175, then we'll see after that. I may eat my words (because you know I won't be eating much else!), but I can't foresee weighing 145! I want to find a balance; I want to be healthy but not starve myself; I'm looking for a happy medium. My dr. quoted me 90 pound loss, as a ballpark figure.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
