Can I Take My Protein Powder Across The Border And Get It Back Into The Us?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I'm packing for my big adventure to Mexico and just had a quick question. Can I pack my Unjury Protein Powder in my luggage to take with me? Will it make it through US airport security and then back through customs when I return? A girl has gotta have something to eat/drink while she's gone....

I would say yes. But to be on the safe side, why don't you figure out how many servings you require prior to surgery and only take that amount? And leave the rest home. That way you don't have to worry about bringing it back home. You won't be drinking Protein right away after surgery anyways (you'll be on clear fluids for the first little while).

Sounds like a really good idea! I hate the thought of my Unjury being confiscated at the airport...

Check with your Dr if you will be allowed Protein after surgery. I know I wasn't allowed to add Protein powders in until 10 days post-op. So didn't need to take them to Mexico with me.

But if you are allowed to have protein that soon after surgery, then yes, they should be fine travelling across the border & back.

Thanks Sharon.

Protien isnt for AFTER surgery, it's for BEFORE. We are planning on flying into San Diego and doing a little sight seeing. I'll have roughly 24 hours I'll need to drink my protien shakes before my date with the Doc.

I think the hospital / clinic will provide whatever you need for your stay, you may need something for your days before or maybe after (although you aren't going to need MUCH besides at all besides Water for the first few days), given that I would advise doing exactly OPPOSITE what Webchickadee suggests, measure out what you need for your trip, put the remainder in another container and then put your measured amount BACK INTO THE ORIGINAL CONTAINER and take it with you. I would then put it into CHECKED luggage. I doubt that they will let you through security with an opened container of a "mystery powder".

Hey Boots,

Thanks for asking this question. We will be going to Mexico 3 days before surgery and was wondering the same thing.

Hey Rootman, glad you spelled it out. I actually wasn't suggesting she just take the powder in a baggie (definitely could be questioned at the border or airport!). But I neglected to specifically say "in the original container".

So thanks for clarifying!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
