Hair Loss-Why Doesn't Anyone Talk About It?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I too had great concern about hair loss so i decided to do my research prior to my surgery. I had surgery on 4/24/2012 and I learned to hair is expected to thin by months 3 to 6 and supposedly began to grow back the next few months. I also learned to take supplements as directed and drink your Protein shakes. I also journeyed to my pharmacy and began to seek out a hair Vitamin that has both Silica and Biotin, which works to provide longer and and stronger hair and nails. This product is also a supplement that requires that you take 2 soft gels daily. Also, to prevent early Hair loss I began taking this supplement prior to surgery in order to get it into my system. This is all that I know at this time and I encourage you to to do your home work/research and go on with the surgery because it is worth having and do take one day at a time and make sure you pray to God for direction because you will need it. I will think of you as you make your decision about thaving the surgery. Jesus is able to help you!

As others have said, it's talked about all the time, actually. As for your questions, virtually everyone has it to some degree. Some people seem not to, or for it not to be noticeable, but just about everyone has it. It's hard to quantify it into a how much because no one really counts the hairs on their head. It hasn't hot yet with my sleeve, but with my band it lasted for about 2 months. It did not thin my hair to where I noticed, but I noticed the amount of hair on my hands/in the shower (I have really thick hair). It was the same when it grew back.

Really, what's some very temporary hair thinning when compared to the weightloss? It's like like no one will notice you're fat as long as you have all your hair. ;)

I have been reading about VSG and trying to decide if I should do this surgery. I think that this is the surgery for me, but then someone mentions their Hair loss. No one seems to really talk about it which makes me nervous. Does it happen to everyone? How much hair loss? Can it be avoided? When it grows back, is it different? I have very thick hair, will it be the same when it comes back? I know this shouldn't be high on my list of issues, but it is. I know that this is a big surgery and it will be good for me to lose the extra weight I have on me, but I can't seem to get past the hair loss. Someone please set me straight. Thanks.

Yep. I'm at 3 1/2 months, and it has just started coming out in handfuls. BUT everyone says it grows back. I lost a lot when I started menopause, and it grew back then too. I am confident that it will. And the bonus is....it will probably grow back in curly! Woo Hoo!

There have been MANY threads on hair loss, as another person said, it's a daily discussion on here.

A good way to avoid as much Hair loss as possible? Take Biotin. And get enough Protein in asap. Clear liquids filled with Protein, have a plan of how to get your grams in from as soon as possible. I am a HUGE proponent of Cytomax's clear "whey Isolate" in tropical and tangerine. Protein helps you with healing as well so this is not just being superficial, but it DOES help with hair loss.

And btw, I'm losing tons of hair, but I'm ok with it. Massive weight loss=massive hair loss and I've got thick hair. And with today's market for weaves, wigs, braids and other options, I choose to look at it as if I have to, it's time for a totally new look. I'd rather the weight be gone more than anything. Good luck to you!

I'm almost 6 months out and started noticing hair loss a few weeks ago. Honestly , it freaked me out a little cause it was a bit of a security blanket for me. Now that I've lost a significant amount of weight I'm okay with it. It WILL grow back and I'm the only one that notices the Hair loss. If losing a little bit of hair is the trade off to being fit and trim I'll have WLS over and over again. I've increased my Protein shake as I was slacking in this area, also take Biotin , Multivitamin , B12 and Calcium pills.

Don't let hair loss be your deciding factor to not having surgery. Life is so good when your weight is no longer an issue.

I have only lost 25 pounds since 4/24/2012 and when the issues about Hair loss comes up I know from previous experience that my hair will grow back because Jesus has helped it to in the past. Thank for your post and encouraging words of wisdom.

This is what I have to look forward to losing! Bittersweet. Did anyone have extremely long hair pre op? Did your length make a difference in the amount of Hair loss?

I'm still trying to decide about surgery and am really scared about the Hair loss. I know it sounds ridiculous. My health is more important than my hair, I know that rationally. But it really doesn't help that I already have hair loss from undetermined causes and I hate it. I have to work really hard to cover it up. Losing much more will not be something I can cover up or keep unnoticeable.

You will lose hair. I hate it, it drives me nuts but I had enough not to care if I lose it. IDK what I'd honestly do if I was already struggling with the amount of hair that I had. That is a hard one for women especially.

However, I do encourage you to go speak to a stylist and see what your options are. I am caucasian and I have seen a couple of friends who have wigs that look great. Where to get them? IDK but I can ask. Let me know if you want me to ask around. IDK if Nioxin helps. Another friend of mine has thinning hair and had the surgery, she just styles her hair in a way that it's not too noticeable.

There ARE options (wigs, weaves, IDK what else) but I have to tell you, I would rather being skinnier and less hair, but in honesty I do think that no matter how much Protein, no matter the Biotin, you are going to lose it. I just can't say how much either.

That's a hard one.... good luck to you!

hair loss from WLS is common, but it doesn't happen to everybody. And those that it does affect it does so temporarily.

I did lose half of my hair. Mine did grow back in curly. It's crazy. I have had straight hair my entire life. I am now learning how to deal with curly hair.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
