Pre-Op Diet And Phentermine

Recommended Posts

I have some left over phentermine from about a year ago, can anyone see why it would be bad to take those with the pre-op diet? It does help with the not feelig hungry and I never had issues with it before, it's just that I didn't feel like I was doing a good enough job of watching what I ate when I took them and stopped.

I mentioned to my doctor that I had taken phentermine in the past and he asked if I was still taking it. I told him I wasn't, and he said if I had been I would need to stop immediately. That was something he told me a few months before my surgery.

I was on phentermine for my metabolism on a schedule that was intended to help keep my metabolism shook up. The on-again period kicked in and went up to 3 days from surgery.

My doctor said it was ok, but I had to keep a very careful eye on my blood pressure and heart rate. If I had too elevated pressure it could have caused issues.

I have never heard of it preventing the reduction of fat in the liver, no offense to any previous posters. It is often prescribed to people who need to eat less in an attempt to ease the liver's size.

I believe that those pills make your heart beat faster and possibly put more stress on it. I wouldn't want to take a chance on it....

I was told to stop taking them about a month prior to surgery. The pills go affect your blood pressure and heart rate. My PCP advised me to stop them when she did my physical for my pre op, way before my surgeon even got around to it. So you might want to look into that before you start taking them.

OK, sounds good. I sure don't want anything to mess up the surgery! Really thrilled with it all and want to do it right!

Yes, my surgeon and anesthesiologist said I had to be off the phentermine for at least 30 days, because of the whole heart rate thing. I would say to avoid it just to be on the safe side.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
