I felt there needed to be a topic where people could ask for and give advice to those who are wondering if what they are experiencing is normal or not. I myself had a three day Migraine after surgery that nothing helped, strange bowels and constantly have a tickling feeling in the back of my throat that feels like there's a tiny piece of food or something (but liquid diet prevents that from being the case) My husband and I were thinking maybe something scraped and scabbed over in the back of my throat from the camera they put down my throat while I was under...anyone have any thoughts?

I am a week post surgery and I had many of the same issues -

A headache for 4 days - I was a diet coke addict and kept drinking up to the day before my surgery. I think I was having a caffeine headache. I took some tylenol and bullied my way through it. By day 4 the headache was gone.

I had diarrhea for the first 5 days. The nurse at the hospital said that happens to a lot of people. If it went more than a week then make certain to call the doctor. Bowel movements are still not pre surgery but they are better.

The scaping of your throat may be correct. I have post nasal drip and everything I coughed up was bloody. It took a few days to get through that also. Give it a few more days. Bring it up with the doctor if it does not go away.

I have not been sleeved yet (6/14) but I read on this forum that the doctor sticks the bougie down your throat and that can cause irritation.

Also, has anyone noticed they have to sleep in a certain position or they get cramps? I can only lay on either my back or my left side...stomach just hurts and right side gives me cramps.

The scraping in your throat may also be caused from intubation, the airway you had during surgery. That shouldn't last but a couple days if so.

Before the throat pain wasn't scratchy or sore, just felt like there was a small piece of food in the very back of my throat I couldn't swallow...today its kinda scratchy when I drink and achy sore...so strange, hope it goes away by tomorrow, done with doctors until my 3 week checkup.

The docs took almost as much time to intubate me as for the surgery itself. Apparently I was a tough subject. I woke up with the usual sore throat, but was hoarse as hell for 2 days.

I've been scoped a lot and have had throat biopsies, and generally have my throat put through a lot of nonsense at least once a year (totally unrelated to my sleeve). Orajel makes a maximum-strength toothache swab that I sometimes use on my throat with good effect. Chloraseptic Max spray is really good, too - just open your throat as much as possible before you spray, then gargle thoroughly before spitting it out.

Ask your surgeon before using either, but these are things I always keep on hand, and they really help me. I used the spray a lot after my sleeve surgery and the berry flavor was one thing that didn't make me feel ill.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
