Having Second Thoughts :(

Recommended Posts

Just had my surgery on May 23rd and I am starting to feel sad. I am still very much uncomfortable. I guess i thought i would be and around by now and i am not even there yet. i still think of food a lot and wonder if I am going to get through this. I guess my addition to food was stronger than I thought. Forgive me, this sounds like a pitty-party.

it doesnt sound like a pity party at all! i started to realize when i had the band that i had food issues and ive been in counseling and its been amazing just take your time. sometimes right after surgery things seem so different you will be ok.

Not a pity party... Sounds familiar actually!!!! :-) I was sleeved on the 15th and that first week I was totally second guessing my decision. But while I am still having some pain and I do think about food (I am on full liquids for another week) I know I made the right decision!!! And once this post-op diet crap is over and I can eat with my family I'll be great!

Hang in there!!

I just had my surgery on the 7th and I did the same thing. I went from being sad to an I can do this attitude. It is an emotional roller coaster because of the addiction. I am almost 3 weeks out and I am finding it easier to eat. My energy levels were up and down and kind of still are depending on if I am getting my fluids in. I mourn food even though my stomach is not hungry your head still thinks you should eat all the time. I have cried and laughed and been excited about the weight loss. My hormones are totally out of whack. I have found my tastes have changed but for the better. I seem to want more healthy food (not that I do not miss the bad ones).

BUT..... it does get better with each passing day. Do not let the food win the battle because it does not care about you lol. Take one day at a time. Some are good and some not so much but you will get there as well as I will. Good luck.

know that what you feel is normal. I to had surgery may 7. I think it tells you things will get better. I stopped thinking about food so much once I moved to soft foods. I missed just chewing. (and yes, I cheated a bit after surgery, I took a bite of an egg. Chew chew chew and spit it out) good luck, hang in there. It gets better.

I was sleeved on 5/4, after the 8th day I really felt better I was able to get up from bed with out a problem my energy keep increasing. Trust me the old habits are coming back try to pick on foods that are not in my diet. I have cheated acouple of times and trust me the experience is horrible from chest pain, vomit and also I have lost the good taste for it. Once I had the bad experience its like my brain does not crave it anymore. Hang in there we are still in the recovery mode.

I had my sleeve on 4/25....I had the exact same feelings as you are. I felt selfish because I cried for a while, things were so different and I didnt have my old stand by of food to comfort me. Im doing better...I wouldnt say day by day, but definitely week by week. Good luck to you and know that what youre feeling is completely normal :)

Hi there!

Just keep in mind that you are only 5 days out. It will take time to get used to the idea that you cannot use food as your go to anymore. If you do have an addiction to food you can try a 12 step program like food addicts annonymous or Overeaters annonymous. Counselling could also be an option. Try to keep your eye on the prize. Remember why you wanted to have this surgery done. I know one of the reasons I wanted it done was to break the addictive behaviour that I showed with food. It will take time, but you can do it. Keep your head in the game!

Hi there,

One piece of advice that I got on this message board (and my favorite!) when I was first sleeved was "the first month sucks." The first month is hard with all of the healing and low energy and especially the emotional turmoil. The first month I missed binging so much I would cry. But it goes away! It really does. I'm almost four months post-op, and after the first month, everything changed for me. I had energy back (full energy after about six weeks), I wasn't struggling with the emotional stuff hardly at all and my new lifestyle was becoming normal. Now I feel SO wonderful - you'll feel great, too. Be patient and give your body time to heal. Take care!!

Sweetie- remember you did just have a major surgery. Relax a bit, walk up and down your road, lounge around, watch tv- get the fluids in. Do walk around- but don't push it

We all go through it!!!!! I went through it. I was sad too thought I would never eat again. I'm 2 months out. And I can eat whatever I want just very small portion. Don't worry it will get better. You will heal inside and ur will be easier to take in food. And eventually you will be able to eat food you liked. Also some foods you miss now when you try them now you don't even want them anymore. I loved soda. I tried it now and yuck. I loved mc Donald's fries I tried it now yuck. I'm eating healthy and not suffering like in the past I'm actually enjoy it. Only thing I eat once in a while that is not healthy is a slice of pizza (all I can eat and feel satisfied) its a great experience physically mentally emotionally. Soon you will be very very happy you did it!!!!!!! I'm down 26 lbs and feel awesome. You too will feel this way!!!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
