Working with the band...

Recommended Posts

Holy, just got my first fill yesterday and although I really feel like I should know how to do this, for all I read here, I am having some hard learning experiences.

First lesson, 1/2 teacup of food. I need to measure because I have overestimated both meals. Chilli, probably ate more than 1/2 cup, much of it came back up. Funny, how it goes down fine, but just doesnt' settle or stay.

This morning, I discovered, either I can't do breakfasts or can't do scrambled egg. Came up too. cheese did not come up.

So wow, I still have a lot to learn. For lunch, I think I will make some meatballs and soft veggies or something....

Any advice, I'd appreciate.

I have a 10CC band and got only 1.65CC my first fill. Here I was wondering if that was enough.

OK, just tried some roasted chicken for supper. I think I am eating too fast and not chewing enough.

I just had one bite and then another and that is all I want. Is that normal?

lunch over, heading toward supper, planning on broiled cod fish, soft veggies.

Paulax - I am just learning how much I can eat also. My nutritionist said that scrambled eggs are sometimes difficult because of all the air whipped into them. Also I have learned (after 2 fills) that I really need to stay on liquids for a few days and then progress to mushies before going back to solid foods after a fill. I pretty much hurled up everything I tried to eat until I learned this. Now, after a week from the 2nd fill I am finally able to eat but really only a few bites. 2 oz is not very much food! I am learning to listen to my body and to wait a lttle between bites and to ask myself if I am full. It has been a hard leaning curve and I am not perfect at it but if I do these things I can enjoy eating and do not hurt or hurl! Good luck to you.

Thanks Lucy, I am a busy mom and am used to inhaling my food, usually while standing or multitasking. Once I slowed down, I was able to get my chicken down where it stayed. I feel as full as I used to feel on a huge dinner and really this is nothing short of a miracle.

Glad I am not the only one testing and failing, testing and succeeding.

Because ya, I was like a cat hacking up a fur ball the last 3 meals. hahahaha!

Thanks

Also, I didn't get advice from my good doctor to go onto liquids for a few days. I just completed 4 weeks of Clear Liquids and was about finished with that. hahaha, but I will keep that in mind next fill.

Don't worry, I've been banded over a year and am still trying to get the hang of it. My band is always fickle and restriction depends on how much sleep & stress I'm under. I know that lack of sleep or stressed out makes my band cinch up, and when I'm relaxed with plenty of sleep I can eat too much. Some mornings I can eat a piece of french toast and a couple of pieces of turkey bacon and the next morning I struggle with oatmeal. I don't know about you but I just have to take each day as it comes - I was expecting a little more consistency with the band.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
