Post Surgery Pain Comparison Question

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure it's even possible to answer this question entirely, but it's something I've been wondering about as I approach my surgery date. We've all seen plenty of posts where people say they are in pain, etc ... I'm curious if a comparison can be made. I've had my gall bladder and my appendix removed.

Is there anyone out there who has been sleeved that can indicate if the pain you feel after the sleeve is about the same, better, worse than having either of the other 2 surgeries (appendiex or gallbladder for example)? I think it will help my brain if I can compare it to an experience I've already had as I prepare. Thanks.

I have had exploratory surgery and my gallbladder out - I did not have any pain at all from those or the sleeve surgery. When I came out of recovery to my room I moved from the gurney to the bed and thought oh man this is gonna hurt - and it didn't - I immediately got up and walked the hall a few times

I had my gallbladder removed years ago and I always told people it was the easiest surgery I ever had - I was up and walking by 10 pm that night. I would have to say that my VSG was comparable. I was up and walking within hours. I know many people complain of shoulder pain afterwards (and I had that with my Lapband surgery also) but I did not have it with the VSG surgery. I had pain meds prescribed prior to surgery and took it only a few times afterwards. The two days I was in the hospital though they administered it pretty regularly and I did not balk at that. They also gave me shots in my stomach to avoid blood clots. I was taken very good care of at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine, FL through the US Bariatrics program. They really are experts and I think that definitely contributed to my overall positive experience after surgery and beyond.

I've had numerous other surgeries - cesarean section (comparably the worst of all), Lapband, tonsillectomy, gallbladder, both elbows, etc. My VSG experience was better than my Lapband one also.

Hope this helps.

My sleeve surgery was not painful at all compared to my two c-sections. If you had laprascopic gall bladder surgery, you will be able to handle the sleeve just fine, IMO!

Awesome, that's what I was hoping to hear! My nerves just start ramping up when I hear people saying they are in pain (which is expected), but now I know it's something I can handle. :)

I have had 2 cesearans and the pain was by far worse than the VSG.but then again everyones pain threshold is different. but bearable

It's not unbearable. It's almost the same as gallbladder surgery... maybe even easier? :)

Yes! They are similar... But the sleeve was much simpler and a lot less pain. All that gas is root cause of pain. Just walk, walk, walk
