Right After Surgery, What Worked Best For You? Hot, Cold, Room Temp?

Recommended Posts

I am trying to get my liquids in and wondering what other people had the best luck with. Did you find cold, hot, room temperature worked the best?

I don't have a problem with what taste good or what I like but I get these little spasm after a few sips and I am hoping to find something that works the best. It kind of feels like when you get those big air bubbles that hurt going up through your chest.

I will be on Protein drinks and Clear Liquids for two weeks but today I'm just working on getting in some liquids. (Surgery date 5/21). I haven't dared try more sold like sf popsicles and sf Jello.

For me warm or room temp Water was easier on me. Even now at almost 4 weeks post op I can't do ice cold water more than a sip at a time. I would use the 1oz medicine cups every 15mins that way you can keep track of your water intake its the most important thing right now

For me, warmer (but not hot) worked best. I heat up my broth, but not too hot. When I have Jello & popsicles, I warm them up in my mouth before swallowing. I do the same with water/crystal light. Sorry you're having problems figuring out what works best for you! It does take time sometimes. With popsicles or jello, I move the bites around in my mouth to pretty much liquify them before swallowing. They've been my saving grace through this clear liquid stage!

Cold made my stomach spasm too. Room temp was okay, but warm felt really good.

I was the same. I'm 4 wks now and once again like really cold drinks, but for the first couple weeks, cold and hot hurt and gave me that bubble feeling. So, room temp was best for Water, and drinks and warm broth felt great. Remember, all this is temporary as we go through different stages.

Looks pretty much like warm is the way to head so that is the direction. I thought I'd ask first to avoid a spasm if I could. I am off to try some Unjury chicken broth. Thanks for all the replies/help.

for me everything was hot or room temp. I am now 3 months out and enjoy some cold stuff now but in small amounts and not all the time. I still prefer room temp I can drink more.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
