June 12Th.. It's A Date!

Recommended Posts

I have been trying for approval since last June. I was first going to get the Lap Band but after researching info, decided to go with the sleeve. I finally got my surgery date. I am going in on June 12 for the procedure. I am getting nervous now.. Is anyone else going in on the 12th?

Hi Kamrie37,

I just got my surgery date today, and I am so relieved to finally have it. I am scheduled for June 13, the day after you. Like you, I was also considering the Lapband... but decided on the sleeve as well. I am really happy to have made this decision and to finally have the date set. :)

I am SO glad that I didn't get the LapBand. I think that the sleeve is going to give me much greater results! I didn't like the fact that the band can erode your stomach. What a pain to have to go in for fills/unfills too. I also don't like the fact that it seems like there are a whole lot of band to sleeve revisions.

I have a friend who has the band and she has done well. I am happy for her and she works the band well. I just don't think it is for me.

Hopefully, we will be happy with our sleeves. I was a little concerned over the fact that it has only been around for about 5 years, and there is no long term data on the VSG as far as the part of the stomach that is being removed. I have heard some things that also concerned me, such as memory problems, fuzzy thinking, etc. and the saying about the stomach being the "second brain". There are alot of important things happening in the stomach, and I tend to worry about losing 85 % of it. My doctor told me that the deuodenal switch operation did the same thing and those people didn't have a problem, so it should be fine.

I totally understand that... I haven't heard the "second brain" theory, but I certainly know that mine "thinks" it is hungry all the time. Hope that part gets taken out with the surgery. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
