I Can't Get In My Protein

Recommended Posts

I'm supposed to get in 60-70 grams of Protein each day. The past three days i haven't gotten hardly any. I puke when i drink the vanilla or chocolate shakes i have, and i don't have the money to keep buying shakes and powders to keep trying. Any advice? :(

How far out are you?

Hello :) How far out are you from surgery?? If you are more than a month out then I would definitely be trying harder to get Protein in thru some form of food. It sounds like you are still on liquids though. For me, before I could eat food I didn't get in much Protein at all because I couldn't get it down. I was having trouble enough with Water or warm liquids as it was.

Have you asked your doctor about anti-nausea medicine? Are you puking because your body is rejecting it (that would be an instant reaction to even a small amount) or because you could be drinking too much, too fast? You have to sip Protein shakes even slower than you would something thinner.

My other advice is to try to drink some protein that you can do warm. Like warm milk (if you can handle milk at this point) or even a Decaf latte (again, if you can handle the milk and you are allowed decaf coffee yet). You could also try soy milk.

If you are still close to your surgery date than I wouldn't freak out too much and just focus on getting in your liquids. It gets a bit easier when you can start to add in food again.

I was in the same boat. The Protein drinks I loved pre-op were intolerable a week post-op. I tried several and settled on Premier Protein drinks from costco.

I hear what you are saying regarding spending the $$ to find a drink that works for you. I probably dropped $100 in my search, but, I found one that works. You have costco not too far from you. Give them a try. They are very light-weight and not sweet, IMO.

I usually tell people not to worry about Protein the first week or so and to concentrate more on the liquids, but you are getting to the point where protein is a necessity.

The Protein Shakes I liked pre-op were too sweet post-op and they made me sick. But after a few weeks, I tried them again and they're fine. The first couple of weeks is hard finding something that doesn't make you sick. But don't give up on it. Things will settle. Just drink what you can. Unjury.com has a nice little sample pack of Protein Drinks. All of them except the strawberry really worked for me and got me through the first few weeks.

Sometimes you really have to choke em down until you are used to them. Dope them up with SF pudding, Torani syrups, extracts or any other flavoring you can.

Also- it may help if you dont smell them before hand- try to drink using a bottle instead of a cup or use a cup with a lid. Helped me tremendously.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
