*Warning...kinda gross*

Recommended Posts

So last night I was up all night absolutely sick to my stomach. It was horrible, but last night I found that no matter how much I needed to I could not actually vomit. I dry heaved a few times and then it finally stopped. Kinda concerned about that, haven't eaten today but has anyone else found that out. Is it because the hole is so small that food can't go back up into the pouch?

Hm, I was thinking you might have gotten something stuck. Doesn't sound like it though. I haven't experienced this, so I'll just pass it on to others who might be more helpful.

I've actually been kind of worrying about this. I know doctors prefer you not vomit if you're banded, but what if you have the flu or food poisoning? It's not like you can keep yourself from vomitting. What are you supposed to do?

Aren't you glad I posted such a useful reply?! Sorry! lol

It is, last night I could control my heaving (eww I know) but if it got really bad i'd call my emergency number the doc gave me and they can give you a prescription that is supposed to stop you from vomitting. Supposedly

YES!!!!! This has happened to me! I had a bout of stomach flu and I was SO nauseated, but when I started to vomit I would just dry heave and all I could get up was air. I thought it was just me. I am glad I am not alone, the flu eventually passed but I was wondering about that too. This probably wasn't very helpful but at least you aren't the only one. --Genn

I keep a prescription for Phenegran handy. It comes in liquid and a supository. I have both I also have zofran. They work wonders. I suffer from Migraines and the only relief has always been to vomit, now when I feel the Migraine coming on I take a dose of Phenegran and it really helps to stop that dry heaving from ever starting. ~Mandy

Nice to know i'm not a rare case. I need to get a prescript for Phenegrin just in case...don't know if the doc would do it on a proactive request though.

I live in mortal fear of gastro, I must be INSANE becoming a teacher. I just know my first few years are going to be a blurr of coughs, colds, flus and gastros, although my own kids are germy enough that my immunity should be pretty goods.

We've had four bouts of gastro in the 8 months I've been banded and I only got it once - and for that time I took Pramin tablets which prevented any vomiting - I had a bit of nausea but I basically got a fever and aches and pains but not the stomach symptoms. That was 3 days after I got home from the hospital. Kids, who'd have em?

I know that many of us are used to turning to ginger ale for an upset stomach but I have found that a hard ginger candy works the same way, but is has to have real ginger in it. I have also discovered that the "BRAT" diet is a bandsters nightmare. My doctor reccomended

B- bananas (can't eat them at all)

R- Rice (nope, not gonna happen) mashed potatos were an acceptable alternative

A- applesauce (hooray I can have that)

T Toast (nope, not me, it will make the vomiting worse)

I was told to stick with mashed potatos, broth and sugar free Jello and pudding. Hope this helps. Mandy

Haven't heard about ginger, or the BRAT diet...THANKS! I know what you mean about teaching though. We started back last Tuesday and i've got kids complaining already, i've had an incident already but it's really not that bad.

I had one night of vomiting, dry heaves, etc. It was miserable. I am sure it was food poisoning. It doesn't seem to have done any damage - it was probably early June. I am going to ask the dr when I see him this week though.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
