Ok..why no gum chewing??? I realize if I swallow the gum which I don't that I will have to go to the ER to have it removed. So other than that...is it because of the swallowing air issue? Does anyone else chew gum???

I LOVE chewing gum, (Haven't been sleeved yet, but went through Kaiser's options class). They said that gum has sugar alcohol in it and that could lead to ulcers in the stomach/sleeve. I don't know what I am gonna do ( I LOVE my GUM)

For me, gum causes discomfort. I used to love chewing gum. I've heard of others that chew gum and have no problems. So, i think it depends on the person.

Well 1 1/2 years out and I chew gum on occasion, I also drink with a straw, drink when I eat, drink diet soda and eat bread on occasion - all so called no-no's. Lost 170 pounds and have kept it off.

I would say that there could not possibly be enough of ANYTHING in gum to effect you any which way, especially sugar free gum.

Remember ALL THINGS IN MODERATION.

I chew gum all the every day. I can't work out without chewing gum.

The reason is becasue there is a chance you would swallow it. I haven't swallowed gum

since I was a little kid.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
