Hi I'm scheduled for surgery in Mexico July 7th whoo hoo! But I am worried about my medical risks. Since the surgery isn't covered by my ins I'm concerned that a sleep test although not required for Mexico may be necessary...anyone with sleep apnea had the surgery? What is your thoughts? Thanks.

I'm not a doctor a but i do have sleep apnea. When I lose about 25 lbs. or so the sleep apnea seems to go away so I am hoping that will happen post op. aside from not getting restful sleep, which may hamper your recovery, I have not heard that sleep apnea poses any additional risks. Getting a sleep test was only important for my lap band surgery 9 years ago because it was a co-morbidity and we had hoped that the procedure would be covered by insurance (it was ultimately denied). Since you, like me are self pay, I don't see why it would be an issue....and will hopefully go away once we join the losers bench.

I do have sleep apnea, but it was diagnosed over a year before my surgery. I was sleeved a little over two weeks ago, and I'm still using my CPAP. I haven't noticed any difference other than the headgear fits looser. It was a co-morbidity and helped me qualify with my insurance, and I'm told it should improve and/or go away with continued weight loss.

MizzLiz....have you been diagnosed with sleep apnea?

I have sleep apnea and still using my CPAP. They want know if you have it and to bring your machine because of the possibility that you will stop breathing. While I was in the hospital after recovery my oxygen monitor would continue to go off if I dozed off and wasn't wearing my CPAP, in just a matter of mins.

I have sleep apnea and have been using a CPAP for 13 years. As I was getting ready for my surgery I was told to bring it with me and they would use it if necessary. When I saw the pulmonary doctor for my preliminary testing, she said it could take a year of weight loss before I lost the need for the CPAP,

I had it, about 170 pounds ago. I did NOT bring it to the surgery although by rights I SHOULD have. I was traveling alone and the thoughts of lugging that thing around AND my luggage all by myself on the return trip just made me worry. I have issues with getting to sleep anyway and true to form I hardly slept at all the few days I was there.

Post-op the headgear started to get really loose and my hard to fit face (I have to use a full face mask) got even harder to fit as my cheeks went away and the fat melted off. The mask would leak awfully and keep me awake. I should of gone back for a sleep test but decided to just wing it and am seemingly fine now. My wife used to hear me stop breathing pre-op and that's what really got me on the sleep apnea / CPAP trail to begin with. She now claims that I breath easy and don't stop and snort, so I guess I'm OK. I also don't snore like I used to either, which is a big NSV too.

I haven't been officially diagnosed yet but I made an appointment to see a sleep specialist that my insurance does cover. Thanks for the info all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
