Diabeties And Pre-Op Surgery & Post Op

Recommended Posts

I'm sure the surgeon will tell me about this so don't know why I'm so worried about it but thought I would ask here to see if anyone had any problems with this..here goes....I have type 2 diabetes and I'm am worried about my sugar going to low during my pre op diet and then during my post op liquid stage...what do you do when you can't eat anything on the pre op and when you can't drink more then an ounce every 15 minutes post op?

It really just depends on your situation. I was only on metformin - no insulin. My dietitian was worried about mine going low during my pre-op because it was only 650 calories a day. I just stopped my metformin for those 2 weeks & was fine. It was never too high or too low.

In the hospital after surgery, they checked my blood sugar every 2-4 hours & I was given insulin shots by the nurses, but it still never got above 250 and never dropped low.

Since the hospital, I was told to stay off my metformin & check 3 times a day & write them down to bring to my doctor. It's only been 150 once & is normally 110-130 throughout the day. I'm still on Clear liquids & just make sure I'm sipping all day long as long as I'm awake.

I admit that my diabetes was never horrible though. I've been diagnosed for about 2 years & my numbers were never over 250 even before medicine.

It will probably depend on your situation, but I know many people who get off their diabetes medicine completely or have it greatly reduced just after surgery.

I am in hospital now has surgery Monday morning and my sugar has been in the 200 range since coming out of recovery, my nurse said it's due to the stress that my body is under from the surgery, other than that I am doing great and will going home tomorrow

I was on Optifast prior to surgery and it was about 80 carbs a day, so I never went too low. I was taking a long acting and short acting insulin, but I gave up the short acting prior to surgery. Since the day of my surgery I've been completely off diabetes meds! My BS now runs from about 110 to 130. If you have an endocronoligist you need to work with him/her to create a plan specifically for you. I was given ranges--if my bs was between this and this, take this. It's never gotten up to that range!

I was on 3 meds for my diabetes. Insulin, Victoza and Metformin x2 a day. I quit the Victoza at the start of my 2 week pre-op diet and adjusted my insulin at my PCP's direction as my sugars started dropping over those two weeks. I started the 2 weeks taking 80 units a night and ended it taking 35 units. I continued the Metformin throughout the entire 2 weeks. They gave me two shots of insulin in the hospital as my sugars were over 180 but less than 200.

I took no meds after I left the hospital for my diabetes. Sugars running around 110 fasting. Less than 60 days out of surgery my diabetic A1C was down to 5.7%. It was 6.7% before surgery with the 3 meds.

A bonus: my high blood pressure is back into the normal ranges. I was on 2 meds before surgery. No meds since surgery for that one either.

Test daily at least 3 times a day and have a plan in place with your PCP as to what you should do as it lowers.

:) Good luck and God bless you!

I took metformin pre op and took it all the way through the liquid diet without issues. I stopped taking it post-op, and my blood sugars normalized almost immediately. I haven't been back on it since.

Welittle1, do not worry to much just monitor your sugar. And make sire your endocrin doc is involved. I was type 2 diabetic. And a bad one at that. I took 2000 mg of metphormin a day, insulin as i woke in morning, 22 units with meals. 24 before bed. I was on alot of insulin. I did good during the pre opp diet. My indocrin kept reducing and i monitored all day. I took my last shot in the hospital. And my last pill day before surgury And 3 months after surgery my endocrin told me i was no longer diabetic.

So my sugestion for you is keep your docs involved and just monitore all day.

Thanks everyone, I do feel better now, you are all such good support. Netgallegos, I"m a bad one also, I take 2000mg of metformin a day and I take the fast/slow acting insulin at 50 units in the am and 40 in the pm. So glad you don't have to take anything anymore, hope I will be able to say the same.

All of you are not only good support for the mind but also for the soul. Thanks again everyone!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
