Pregnancy after banding?

Recommended Posts

My doctor informed me that i should wait 2 years before becoming pregant after having the surgery (i have not had it yet). I did not want to wait this long, as I am 27 now and will be 28 at the end of January, and my husband is anxious to start a family (more so than myself). Has anyone else heard that you can wait a shorter time or does it just depend on how the banding goes for each individual?

Hi there,

My doctor has suggested one of two things.

A. Get banded and wait 2 years to become pregnant.

B. Get pregnant and have the band after delivery.

I'm 31 and would like to have children by the time I'm 35. So option A is the right option for me. Not to mention, I want to be eating the right foods during my pregnancy and have the energy of a healthy and fit mother to keep up with them when they're born. I'm also pretty sure that I would put on more weight if I were pregnant before I got banded than had I waited two years afterwards.

It's not an easy decision but I'm sure you'll do what's best for you! Good luck!

I agree with you. I weigh 235 now and am 5'2''. I also recently had ACL reconstruction surgery 2 years ago, and that extra weight would NOT be good, if i chose to get pregnant now. Plus, i HAVE to learn how to make healthier eathing decisions before i have a baby. Thanks for your response!

Hi KG1

I was adviced 18 month to two years after surgery too. Apartently your body under goes a lot of changes when your banded. I just been banded and the clock against me:phanvan but i know i would be able to get pregnant naturally unless i lost weight.

Hope that helps and Good luck

I think my doctor said 12-18 months as well. I'm 27 and was banded last week on my birthday, so I've decided to wait until Jan 08 to start. Hopefully by that time I'll have adjusted to my band and my new body

I had my band in July 2001. Got pregnant in March of 2004. Looking back I had been closer to goal (I was still about 60 pounds overweight) when I got pregnant. It was hard to lose again after having my son but now I have lost 40 more pounds (he's almost 2) and am almost to goal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
