I feel like I'm fling blind with this, I'm 15 days post op today and I have my docs ok to move on to puree'd/mushy foods. But I don't know what I should eat nor how much of it I should be consuming. Any suggestions will be welcomed :).

I'm 5 days post op and have many questions I need help with. Thought I did all my research before hand but now I'm thinking not! I can't figure out what to eat or when or even how much. Any help I would love!!!!!

My surgeon had me start on Mushies two weeks out after one week on clear and one week on Purees. Purees are pretty much anything you can grind up to be almost as smooth as baby food. I did make a shrimp salad puree that was pretty yummy, but mostly I did cream Soups, cottage cheese, chili with sour cream, Beans, greek yogurt with no fruit or added sugar. I have a Magic Bullet so I could grind everything to just the right consistency but a food processor or blender will work too. I could bascially eat 1/4 cup.

Instructions from my NUT have these items on the mushy/soft foods stage which I stay on for two weeks and then I graduate to regular food:

Any Soups

Cottage cheese

Soft Cheese

Any cooked fish

Ground meats with sauces

Very soft vegetables except for peas and corn

Yogurt - especially Greek, you can use the kind with fruit (no seeds) now

Applesauce

Hummus

Really, anything that you don't have to chew too much. You'll still want to chew your food because this stage is also training you to chew your food and eat slowly. I started the soft/mushy stage last Saturday and depending on the food get down between 1/4 to 1/3 cup. I eat five times a day, but my morning snack is my Protein shake. I really eat slowly though (which is a challenge at work!) and so it takes me 20 minutes to eat my food. Last night I had spaghetti sauce made with turkey italian sausage - about 1/4 cup. It went down great. I haven't had any problems though with any of the foods except for Peanut Butter. It has too much sugar in it I think. I put less than a teaspoon in my Protein Drink well blended and boy did I pay for it.

I try and keep to mostly Proteins because I am eating so little food and I need the energy so I haven't really added in any carbs like cooked potatoes. Yogurt for Breakfast with some Protein powder in it is my staple and cottage cheese for a snack. If you can't do cottage cheese, try skim milk.

My favorite mushy food was refried Beans with a little melted cheese. It was sooooo good after being on a liquid diet for a month including my 2 week pre-op.

My doctor's office gave us some instruction in advanced. Please excuse any typos, I am going to retype what I was given. I will try to scan the Bypass/Sleeve Soft Diet sheets that I was given later if anyone needs.

Here's a sample menu for pureed diet:

PUREED DIET - SUGGESTIONS AND EXAMPLES

Breakfast

1/4 cup high Protein cooked Cereal

1/4 cup pureed low sodium/low fat meat

1 chewable sugar-free complete Vitamin

Snack

1/2 cup pureed fruit

lunch

1/4 cup cottage cheese (lowfat)

1/4 cup pureed fruit

snack

1 cup High Protein shake

dinner

1/2 cup mashed potatoes with low fat gravy

1/2 cup broth

1 chewable sugar free complete Vitamin

snack

1 sugar-free fudgiscle

This sample menu provides approximately 80 grams of Protein and 885 caloires - SIP Water throughout the day

High Protein Pureed Diet recipes

Cheeseburger

3 oz. lean chicken or turkey

1 slice fat-free cheese

2 tbs.p warm beef broth

1/2 hamburger bun

Cook meat and drain fat. Add all ingredients except broth to blender and puree on high. Gradually add broth to desired consistency

Yield 1 serving

Calories 309

Protein 27.0 grams

Chicken Stew

1 Cup chicken, cooked and cubed

1/4 cup rice, cooked

1/4 cup mixed vegetables, cooked

1/4 cup chicken broth

1/4 cup skim milk

1/4 cup nonfat dry milk

Blend together

Yield 3 servings

Calories (per serving) 120

Protein (per serving) 15.0 grams

Fish

4oz. Whitefish fillet

4 tsp. nonfat tarter sauce

Warm skim milk (as needed)

Cook fish by baking or broiling. Place fish and nonfat tarter sauce in blender. Puree on high speed. Gradually add milk to make mashed potato consistency.

Yield: 2 servings

Calories (per serving) 116

Protein (per serving) 15.0 grams

French Toast

1 slice frozen French Toast

"I can't believe it's not butter!" spray

3 tbsp. warm sugar-free Syrup

Warm french toast according to package. Spray with I can't believe it's not butter. Cut into quarters. Place all ingredients in blender. Puree on high until smooth consistency is achieved.

Yield 1 serving

Calories: 171

Protein 4.0 grams

Grilled Cheese

1 slice whole wheat/high Fiber bread

2 slices fat-free American cheese

I can't believe its not butter spray

3 tbsp warm skim milk

Heat non-stick pan over medium heat. Spray one side of bread with I can't believe it's not butter side down on pan, top with cheese and heat until cheese melts and bread is toasted brown. Fold sandwich in half and cut into four pieces. Place in blender and puree on high, adding milk until smooth. Adjust the amount of milk used for thicker or thinner consistency.

Yield 1 serving

Calories 146

Protein: 12.0 grams

High Protein Breakfast Shake

1/2 cup fat-free plain yogurt

1/4 cup skim milk

1/2 small banana

1/4 cup non-fat dry milk

Mix all ingredients together in blender

Yield 1 serving

Calories 125 per serving

Protein 12.0 grams per serving

High Protein Mashed Potatoes

2 tbsp mashed potato mix

1/2 cup hot skim milk

2 tbsp. nonfat dry milk

Mix nonfat dry mil with skim milk and heat to a boil. Add mashed potato mix. Mix well with a wire wisk. Mix thickens as it stands

Use Butter buds or fat-free gravy to add flavor

Yield 1 serving

Calories 148

Protein 10.0 grams

Chicken/Fish/Turkey

4oz meat cooked

6 tbsp. low fat gravy

Chop meat into small pieces, blend on high speed, gradually adding gravy until desired consistency

Yield 2 servings

Calories (per serving) 126

Protein (per serving) 16.0 grams

Tuna salad

1 6 oz. can light tuna in spring Water, drained

2 tbsp. fat-free Miracle Whip

1tsp mustard

1/2 tsp. onion powder

1/4 tsp. celery salt

Add all ingredients to blender. Puree on high until smooth. Refrigerate

Note: May substitute canned chicken for tuna

Yield: 3 servings

Calories (per serving): 60

Protein (per serving) 11.0 grams

Mushies or purees are anything you would feed to a baby or can eat without teeth. Plenty of mush ideas on the food section of this forum.

Start with a small bowl (like a small ramekin) and add 2 Tablespoons or 1/8c of food and expect to only eat that much for each meal- gradually increasing to (no more than) 3oz at any meal total. Plan on taking a full 30 min to finish your food- no more than that and no less.

Your experience may varry- some people can eat 3oz of pudding, puree chicken, etc no problem from day 1. Some people 3 mo out are still struggling with an oz of cheese! Your best gauge is your stomach sleeve.

Have you tried these recipes? I hate soggy bread.... so I'm wondering if these have the texture of soggy bread when everything is mixed up.

Be weary of eggs...a lot of ppl have difficulty w them because of the volume.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
