The cost of living varies so much from city to city within a state, from state to state within the USA, from country to country and from city to city within a country, that no $ value can be considered normal.

It is not apples and oranges, but it is not apples and apples either.

When I sold my home in Brooklyn, NY, I could have bought 10 homes of comparable size in the same quality neighborhood in the suburb of Pittsburgh where my friends live. How much a dollar is worth is a neighborhood value. How much day-care should cost is also a neighborhood value.
