I see that many patients travel to other countries to have their procedures done. Why is that? I would feel very afraid about travling to a strange country to have surgery myself. I would be afraid of getting a fraud or wierdo lol.

Many patients that go to Mexico go because their insurance won't cover it and most of the surgeries in Mexico are around $5000 instead of upwards of $10,000 - $15,000+ here in the states. There are some well-qualified doctors there, so it is a good choice for some people. I am a self-pay patient, but I decided that I felt more comfortable with a local doctor even though I had to pay more simply because I felt better about having a local doctor for followup care and in case of any complications. However, some people are comfortable with going to Mexico to save money.

I am actually sitting in a hotel in Mexico recovering from my sleeve surgery. I chose to come here because of price. I am sel pay. For 6 months prior I have researched everything I possibly could and was lucky enough to know many people who had gone through the same medical group as me. If I had to do this "blindly" I dont know if I would have. Word of mouth is extremely important when you are considering going out of country.

What part if Mexico is this. Good price :) with all the violence in my area in Mexico i live in a border town I'd rather pay the extra few to safely do it in Texas lol.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
