LadyIvy 159 Posted May 21, 2012 I have seen multiple people on this forum say that because we don't have a pouch we are not prone to our stomach stretching. I have also seen others that say that the stretchy part of the stomach has mostly been removed. Did your docs tell you this? What did they say regarding this? Does anyone have any respectable links explaining this? Thanks again all!
Bubbaloo10 55 Posted May 21, 2012 I was told by my doc and NUT that the part they remove is the stretched and stretchable part. The part they leave behind is the muscular part that pushes food throught your system. It will stretch some, but they said I would probably not be able to eat more than 8 oz at one time when it stretches to its max.
BKMama 179 Posted May 21, 2012 What my surgeon explained to me (this question was in my long list of questions) was that saying our stomach sleeve won't stretch isn't entirely accurate. According to him, your sleeve can stretch but only after long periods of constantly overeating your stomach. He said it isn't something that happens with a couple or even many random/sporadic meals larger than you should eat, but instead meal after meal for a length of time. Basically, just as we stretched our regular stomachs out overeating over time, the same can be done with the sleeve. (Also similar to RNY patients who stretch their pouch....but that stretching can happen a bit easier for them because of where their pouch is.) He said that the sleeved stomach initially makes overeating so uncomfortable that most patients won't need to worry about overeating regularly...but it will be something interesting to watch once 10+ year data is available on the VSG. 1 lil lee reacted to this

MyGastricSleeveLife 180 Posted May 21, 2012 I was told that it can stretch some over time, but it can never stretch back to the size it used to be. My surgeon said that most people that gain weight back are because of constant bad choices in food even though they still can't eat like before. We'll never be able to eat 6+ pieces of pizza in one sitting again, but even if you continuously eat one slice of pizza over time you'd gain weight back! My surgeon said it won't stretch much, but didn't give a number of ounces or anything like that. If you follow your plan and don't push it, you won't have problems! Just because it stretches over time and CAN hold more food doesn't mean you HAVE to eat more food! 2 lyndynojo and BKMama reacted to this
MyGastricSleeveLife 180 Posted May 21, 2012 Oh - I have researched it online or anything though, so I don't have any links to share. I just went by what my surgeon said. :-)

The major part of the elastic stomach has been removed and although the remaining stomach can stretch a bit, it will never be able to stretch to what it was before. My main problem was eating only once a day and eating a TON of food when I did it. I mainly use the surgery to help with Portion Control. My one late meal really screwed up my metabolism. I find that now that I know I can't get in all my calories for a day at once, I seem to be doing really well! 1 butterfyeffect reacted to this
LadyIvy 159 Posted May 22, 2012 That's very interesting. I can't wait to start seeing people 10 years out with their success stories I watched a live stream Saturday of a sleeve surgery ans this doc made a statement that he had been doing the surgery for about 11 years. I found out after my mother passed that she had a gastrectomy. No one knows why, how or when, but it had to be over 20 years since she was married to my dad that long before she passed. She was always very thin (about 105, but she was only 5'1") I have never seen a picture of her big and she never had any complications (since no one knew). I hope that bears well for all of us! JimmyGotSLEEVED 270 Posted May 22, 2012 The sleeve DOES indeed stretch! But the sleeve has not been around long enough to develop a steady study on the stretching capacity. This will most like take another 20 years before they post the ACTUAL capacity of the stretching of the sleeve. Drs only inform you on what they know based on recent studies. This will most likely need a long term study 1 Musharooni reacted to this
