Problems Eating Meat, Anyone?

Recommended Posts

I am 6 weeks post op, down 28 pounds, cleared for "full foods". However, I can't seem to keep down meat, like steak, roast beef, spare ribs. I can eat ground meat. I think I am eating slow enough and chewing enough, but I stop after about one ounce because my stomach hurts and then a few minutes later;;;;up it comes. Is this normal? Does it ever change? I don't want to eat Greek Yogurt and shakes my whole life. I seem to do better with chiden and moist fish.... Thanks.

Beef is really tough, have you tried cooking it in a crock pot, it is much more tender. That's the way I cook my pork and beef. Try it it's easy and tasty.

My guidelines say to start with chicken & fish and other lighter meats. My surgeon said that many people struggle with pork and steak until much later. I remember reading one person's story saying they still can't have brisket (a big thing in TX) even a year out. However, I've seen others that said they could handle meat (beef) after 4-6 months or so. It really depends on the person. Chicken & fish are easier for most people that I've read about so far.

I am about 10 weeks post op and I had brisket a couple of days ago. It did not settle well and was somewhat painful going down, big mistake.

My nutritionist told me to eat ground meats and fish until I am 3 months post op. I've learned my lesson.

I have had the most luck with ground turkey patties. I usually mix the ground turkey with egg and a little bit of bread crumbs. It makes a moist turkey patty, which is very satisfying, better than Greek yogurt.

I'll be avoiding beef for a long time!

I'm only a week behind you and I am looking forward with some trepidation to trying meats. I do know that eveyone is different and some will handle it bette'r than others. Remember, you are being released to eat full foods AS TOLERATED. What you don't tolerate at 6 weeks may be tolerated at 8 or 10. Keep trying, and don't beat yourself up if you can't handle a food by a certain time. Your sleeve will tell you when it's ready.

thanks you everyone for your replies. it helps me to not wonder if there is something wrong with me because of my difficulty with meat. i will wait a couple of more months and try again.

My nutritionist said we should never eat prime rib or steak again. One tiny bite if any he said.

They are right you really need to eat only soft meats. chicken can be to hard too.

Chop in a chopper

I wonder why your nut said no steak ever? My nutritionist paperwork said 6-9 months out, but my nutritionist told me I could try earlier if I could tolerate it. I was able to eat it at about 3-4 months out with no problems.

I was sleeved in March and had 3 bites of steak last night. It was fine. I never could eat meat before like that but it was marinated and very tender. I think that is the only reason I tolerated it because even Hamburger and chicken can hurt and come back up. I like the crockpot idea. What I really miss is the salad that comes with a little steak. I still can't eat salad, Weird.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
